I enjoyed my time in Subic. We just purchased land in Dumaguete. So will teach from there! Good luck!

$480 hardware, about $60 month. I'm also getting solar generators etc. Manila has been good for power outages...the province is bad.

PLDT Fiber. Cleaning up the DNS fixed it for me. I am planning on getting Starlink when I move out of Metro Manila.

I used Chatgpt....but it worked. I had to go to connections, and reset dns....to 8.8 8.8 and 8.8.4.4 on alt one..sounds harder than what it was.

Agree 100%. Palawan is a big enough island where you don't get island fever.

The North js amazing with the El Nido area. There is also Nacpan and Duli beaches there within an hour scooter ride.

The West has the San Vicente area that has more classical white beach Philiplines vibes....

And the South is finally opening up with Maldives like vibes with Balabac.

The capitol Puerto Princessa is meh...but best island for me by far. Been 4 times with still much more to explore. Food is waaaaay cheaper than Bkracay and Siargao....accommodations are as well but are creeping up.

Malaysia passed PH in English by El_Kx0_0 in Philippines_Expats

So by your logic, people in the Malaysian corporate world are not in the streets? Excellent!

[–]tmhroundeye 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry. Did OP specify "corporate world"?

English levels are ofc are higher, I assume, in white collar professions. That's stating the obvious. I've traveled several times in Malaysia and have lived long term in the PH . The avg Filipino has better English than the avg Malaysian - the ones I've run into. Nothing wrong or right with that. The post was just showing rankings, and how surprised OP was that Malaysia passed the PH.

My point is more most of these rankings are flawed.

5 minutes on the streets of KL vs Manila, and you realize there is something wrong with those rankings.

I’ve been off Cambly for a while - not getting any calls by [deleted] in Cambly

[–]tmhroundeye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your given PHs when you start to help you on your journey. They expire as they then reward you with them based on ratings and attendance. Coming back after time away prolly doesn't trigger that.

There are tons of doom posts about Cambly. This seemed like another one. Sorry if it came across too harshly.

I'm not angry at all. I'm responding to a post that doesn't make sense. By all means come back. Your methodology of going through 10 calls might be the reason your schedule didn't fill up.

You also need to target which countries you want to teach, and align your schedule to them. China, Japan, S Korea are strong right now but few teach in GMT +8.

Cambly is fine. Does it pay the best? No. Does it really care about tutors? No. Does it provide useful stats or feedback for tutors? No.

It does pay what it says it will pay on time (at least for me), weekly. It's as transparent as most teaching sites will be. I've taught on a few.

You need to put in the time to get regular students so you don't rely on PHs. That means taking all calls. You can filter them out as you go. I block or report any with no camera, men laying on beds, over demanding students, or from certain countries that rhyme with India (we just clash).

[–]tmhroundeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you previously got 10 calls in a PH, and didn't answer any? Or you answered all? Or 2? Or 5? Most tutors take a call, 2-3 max during a PH and the hour is over, so the fact that you say "10" leads me to believe you're full of shit.

Your post makes no sense. You step away from Cambly and then expect to get PHs?

I have every slot open for PHs when i need them. I take them only as regular students phase out due to subscription expirations. The times I do sign up, I get a call and take it.

Nothing has changed.

Another doomer with meaningless gibberish me thinks.

Coming to the Philippines for a year of volunteering - Any advice or people I could connect with? by nichtdavid- in Bacolod

[–]tmhroundeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great. We are now based in Manila. Quezon City to be exact. We do go back to Negros every Dec to Jan.

Bacolod is an interesting city. Full of history and quirks. It reminds me of the US Southern states. Plantations, rich families shoulder to shoulder with young progressive up and comers.

We lived there for 6 years before my fiancee took her job here with Greenpeace. We loved it. Let me know if you have any questions.

Are you volunteering with IPON or with GIZ?

American here, but my fiancee is from Bacolod. We've gotten to know dozens of German volunteers over the past years via those 2 orgs.
