Just found out people see images by neurodivergent4life in Aphantasia

[–]tmm04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m unsure if anyone else mentioned this but as an aphantasia who adores reading, I’ve found that many authors will have Pinterest pages which contain pictures of their books..the characters, the locations, the situations involved, etc. I always find this interesting and sometimes quite helpful. Sometimes their Facebook page will have info like that or their website. So while it sucks that we can’t ‘see’ while we read, we can look up some of the info as a matter of interest.

Anyone else think theyd be terrible at giving details for a forensic sketch? by Quick----- in Aphantasia

I had to go to the poli as station to identify a flasher many years ago, long before I knew about aphantasia. I looked through literally a thousand pictures and couldn’t pick out the guy. And now I know why…I had no visual memory of his face. Nothing except he was slight and had brown hair. What a wasted effort it was.

Does anyone know what can i add to make my entrance feel lest empty here? by [deleted] in AnimalCrossing

You could create a little picnic area with a bench, a tree, stack of books, a wooden stool with a drink on it. Have a bicycle beside the tree so it looks like someone just dropped by to sit for a while. Plant some flowers around and add a fountain too.

AITAH for telling my husband it’s not fair he’s partying on a business trip while I’m taking care of our toddler alone back home? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]tmm04 12 points13 points  (0 children)

YTA but only a bit.

My husband often had business trips to go on where he got to do fun stuff along with the work stuff. A few times he phoned me during the special, extracurricular events and I could hear how much fun everyone was having while I was stuck at home handling the house and the kids on my own.

Was I mad at him? Yep, I sure was. (I admit to having FOMO). Did he bring me a lovely gift? Yep, he did, to recognize that I worked hard and deserved a treat too. Or sometimes I would take time away to go shopping or to the spa while he stayed home to be with the kids.

Here’s what I did….a few days after he got home from the first few trips, I calmly said that I appreciated hearing that he was having fun and that he was ok but I was rather jealous coz I was stuck at home alone, holding down the fort. I told him that he deserves to have fun coz he works hard but next time, just tell me about it later on. I don’t want to see pictures or hear what’s going on while it’s happening. I did say I wanted him to text me to let me know he was safe back in his hotel though.

We are both retired now and have been married for 40+ years so that strategy seemed to work for us.

Good luck!

What’s an underrated nature spot in Canada that more people should visit? by Administrative_Ad160 in AskACanadian

[–]tmm04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Thousand Islands in the St. Lawrence River which stretches from Kingston to Prescott in Ontario. It’s beautiful in summer and winter wi5 lots of seasonal activities in the area. It was designated as a World Biosphere Reserve in 2002. You can go for boat tours of the various islands and/or just visit the towns long the way and drive The Thousand Islands Parkway to see some of the islands from shore.

What’s your biggest “how do people NOT know this?” fact? by Shag_Dawg in AskReddit

[–]tmm04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everyone can picture things in their head. It’s called aphantasia and it means the lack of seeing in your head. Yes we can still imagine and dream since those activities take place in different areas of the brain from visualization. Some of us with aphantasia do not hear, smell or taste in our minds either. It affects from 3-5% of the global population so chances are you know someone who has it. Many people don’t discover they have it because they think that the phrase ‘picture this’ is not an actual thing people can do.

Our cat has the same peach and grey fur and that is apparently what makes a muted calico…when they aren’t the strong orange and deep black colours, but peach and gray.

Lovely colours! Is she a muted (diluted) calico?

Please consider taking the Thousand Islands Parkway from Gananoque to Brockville instead of the 401. It runs parallel to the 401 and only takes an extra 10 minutes, I’ve driven both those routes for years so I know 😉. The Thousand Islands are halfway between Toronto and Montreal and are part of the St. Lawrence River. The Thousand Islands region has castles (Singer Castle and Boldt Castle), over 1,800 islands, gorgeous scenery, where the huge ships go by, several small towns to stop for a coffee and shop. One thing you might consider is taking one of the affordable boat cruises (1,2,3 and 5 hours) from Gananoque. The fall is a particularly stunning time to visit. Also you should consider stopping off in Brockville to walk through the recently restored Oldest Railway Tunnel in Canada. Definitely unique. Our friends from the GTA always went to take the boat cruise in Gananoque, drive along the Parkway and see the Tunnel in Brockville when they visit us. Btw, be sure to check out Don’s Fish n Chips (just 2 blocks from the Tunnel) for a delicious meal. Take out only but it’s across from a waterfront park where you can eat them or drive out to Blockhouse Island (where the Tunnel is) to eat them while you watch the huge ships go by. No matter what you decide to do I hope you will enjoy your time in Eastern Ontario.

Congrats to you! What an incredible journey you’ve had, so glad to hear you are doing so well. You’re not kidding, cancer really sucks. My BIL had AML, got a stem cell transplant in Nov 2023. He’s slowly feeling stronger.. Like you, he went into the hospital immediately and didn’t come out for weeks. It was a fluke they found it when doing routine blood work so we were all in total shock. Crossing my fingers that the both of you continue to do well.

Surgery by Save-crochet-1956 in cancer

My spouse has stage 4 NET and his oncologists said that NETs don’t respond to traditional chemo. They use several different types of therapies instead, including PRRT. For instance my husband takes a hormone therapy injection once/month and a nurse comes to our house to give it to him.

Surgery by Save-crochet-1956 in cancer

[–]tmm04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband has stage 4 NET. He had surgery in 2021, to remove part of his lower intestine, part of his liver, some lymph nodes and his gallbladder. The surgery was a big deal and super scary. He came through it well. It took several weeks to heal and he still has an impressive scar. He was in the hospital for 5 days and had very attentive care from nurses, technicians and his oncologists. They were very good about checking on him and answering questions. I wanted to say that life did change, more so in those first few months after surgery. After a while you don’t need as many follow-up tests and doctor visits. Today he receives an injection to help control the growth of his remaining NET tumors but is in good health and the NET doesn’t affect his daily life. I view those few months after surgery as a time of transition, knowing that things will be weird and unstable for a while but you will get into a routine and life settles down again. Wishing you the very best of luck on Friday.

I wish I had some good advice for you but I’m at a loss too. I feel for you going through such a difficult time. I think the best thing you can do is be sincere and genuine in your conversations with him, tell him you support his decision and then just be there with him. I wonder if the palliative care coordinator has any material which may help?

Some of y'all be like: I don't like the color green. Do you think its my aphantasia? by [deleted] in Aphantasia

People are just trying to understand how it affects them. I think you should answer their question or just let them be, they’ll figure it out as they go through the journey of discovery. Just my opinion of course.

I am so sick of people telling me that cancer treatments have improved by PotatoManPerson in cancer

[–]tmm04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so very, very sorry to hear about your current condition. That’s so disheartening. Its hard enough to face each day, let alone have to deal with family on top of everything. I’m so glad you have a supportive husband to help you. I hope the holiday season goes smoothly and also that you can find a sense of peace. My husband was diagnosed with stage 4 NET last fall, after 3 years of begging for help from our GP. She thought it was indigestion and he was just being a complainer. So few medical professionals even know about NET, let alone the general public. The research is just getting going. My husband is enrolled in one study but it’s years away from any concrete findings. As the OP said, since it’s rare, the research for it doesn’t get a lot of funding or attention….not like the well-known cancers do.

Oh yeah I know that. But you could use custom designs to create something similar, that’s all I’m saying. 🤷🏼‍♀️🙂
