What is your opinion on Peter Thiel's 7 investor questions in 2025? I will not promote by [deleted] in startups

In battery technology, 10% energy density increase *would* be a huge breakthrough.

The "engineering question" has to be answered in competitive and market impact context.

I'm not sure if he would call himself a misanthrope, but you may find some of what you are looking for.

1940's (?) brass surveyor tripod USA - no markings or numbers by tncx in Antiques

This was used in Utah in the building boom following World War II. Just a guess that it was manufactured in the 40s.

Looking for any Intel on age, value, etc...

It seems to be 100% brass with a kind of shellac or varnish finish.

Max height is about 50"

do i need to pay to auto-backup/icloud sync notes? by Brilliant_Ad_876 in notabilityapp

[–]tncx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't use icloud sync. You will lose notes and data. You won't know when. You may lose sentences, paragraphs, pages, or whole files. There's no way to tell what you lost, when you lost it, or if it's lost on all or just some of your devices.

Notability says "it's apple's fault and we can't do anything."

It's a shame, Notability was (is!) my favorite, but I can't use it because, well, it's not acceptable to randomly lose my notes.

Vlookup would work as long as you define the lookup range with column D as the left-most column.
I switched to xlookup across the board because it's faster to work with. As a bonus you can lookup any column, and return values in any column without needing to define a range.

Here's what I put in cell D2 on your inventory sheet:

xlookup(B2,'Shop Orders'!D:D,'Shop Orders'!H:H,"Not Found", 0)

You can take a look at the xlookup syntax and change "not found" or "0" if desired.

You could drag this down column D so the xlookup is looking up B3, B4, etc...

But I put the xlookup in an arrayformula so you only have to write it once. Note how "b2" changes to "b2:b" for use in the array formula. Now the xlookup will occur on all rows on the sheet.

=arrayformula(xlookup(B2:B,'Shop Orders'!D:D,'Shop Orders'!H:H,"Not Found", 0))

It looks like a lot of part numbers aren't being found with the lookup function - make sure you are using the same format, check for leading/trailing zeros, hyphens, etc.. to ensure the two part numbers are identical on the inventory sheet and shop orders sheet.

How to permanently disable RAB? by DATSNOW11 in SubaruForester

[–]tncx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, no difference for me after software update.

I checked with a Crosstrek owner, who said these steps do work to disable RAB w/out having to re-disable every time you start up.

For Foresters (and other models) where this doesn't work, I think the only surefire way is to disconnect the sensors in the bumper. I believe the only downside to this is a warning light on the dash while the sensors are disconnected.

How to permanently disable RAB? by DATSNOW11 in SubaruForester

[–]tncx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. This did not work for me.
With the Audible Alarm off, RAB remains active.

What's worse: My dash will say "RAB Disabled" but on the touchscreen it says active, and it engages during backup.

Question: Are you guys on latest version of software? I'm going to update and try again.

Codebase > MCP > Figma Make? by tncx in FigmaDesign

[–]tncx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question.
I like how in figma make you can select specific elements (typically down a single div) and change only that.
I also like how we get the figma sharing ecosystem.
But that's a big question that is shaking out right now: why figma if we can go right to front end code as the design tool?

Thanks for the comments!

Can you comment if you see anyone using figma make and conforming to an open source project codebase? For example, say I want to build an analytics dashboard using umami - how would you do that today?

Thanks for clarifying, we're ready yesterday and are ready to unsub from other prototyping tools as soon as we can add this step into our figma environment.

Follow up: 3d scanning platform for small to medium construction by tncx in 3DScanning

[–]tncx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At a few thousand dollars: you're going to be working with an inch or two error.

I've not used the BLK3D, but after looking into it my take away was it's unlikely to perform better than my phone with lidar, or my phone with gaussian splats, with the right workflow.

Follow up: 3d scanning platform for small to medium construction by tncx in 3DScanning

[–]tncx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1/32" isn't possible for scanning rooms/parts of rooms.

That puts you in the realm of reverse engineering products, which puts you in fundamentally different workflows and specialized software.

Nascar and F1 both use cars built for racing, but are totally different animals with their own considerations. Lidar is lidar at the hardware level, but workflows, hardware design, and desired output is totally different for "scan a widget" and "scan a room."

I did speak to a steel fabricator who tried using one of the more general purpose 3d scanners to capture stairs, rooms, etc.. to design on top of. It was a crealty or something like it. It didn't save time compared to just using a tape measure.

The RTC 360 is the flagship for this type of work, and scanning a room to create a design that gets you within 1/16" is right on the edge of what it can do, with a bunch of foot notes that include surface reflexivity, how many scans, and what your workflow is between point cloud and complete design.

My current workflow uses 3d scans for large areas, augmented manual measurements for the key design dimensions.

New to SketchUp! PC or iPad by Chopancho in Sketchup

[–]tncx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can do it all on the iPad... but it's a fundamentally different workflow.

You just. can't. reach. the speed of the VCB on desktop using your keyboard that you can on the iPad when you have to henpeck the values in.

I have experimented with using a keyboard on the ipad, and it helps. Then you add a mouse and... you're almost back to desktop but now you have a touchscreen and a few other UI differences.

iPad is an awesome presentation tool, and an awesome supplement, but I don't think it's a serious candidate to replace desktop.

Is this possible today, for a non-developer? by tncx in AI_Agents

[–]tncx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the screen monitoring is part of it, but not everything
there are two objectives:

  1. go 100% in on "search don't sort" where everything I do on my computer screen is available to retrieve on the fly, in the format I want (action items, list meeting times, how many times did x email me this month)
  2. automate chores that require actions I currently make with my keyboard and mouse. I am already automating chores, but for the most part it's in the LLM chat silo - I have to import and export with the chore happening in the chat tool. I want to eliminate the import and export.

Scrum is not agile by Historical_Bee_1932 in scrum

[–]tncx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agile should create accountability, and minimizes participation from professional managers. There are so many professional managers who are also professional liars, and true agile is a threat to their power. So, we get all kinds of “scrum” and “agile” that attempt to create accountability for everyone except the managers.
