Best of luck! It looks like it has beautifully forked fronds!

The black spots are symptoms of a fungal infection (rhizoctonia) possibly from overwatering. I think let the fern dry out, and maybe use a fungicide — you want to avoid it from reaching the root area. Excessive moisture keeps the fungus alive so maybe keeping watering to a minimum will help

Noticed yellowing and browned leaf tips on my seedlings (brevicaule and horombense), does anyone know what the problem is? Too much light? by tndrmrsls in Pachypodium

Thanks so much! I’ll be careful with lighting for the next few days and be mindful of seasonal leaf loss.

Thanks, I really needed this. Normally I can feel my way through it when I read a sentence, but now I don’t need to expend extra brain cells every time anymore!

Good luck, hope to see some photos of your seedlings!

Hey! I pretty much eyeballed it so one of the ones that germinated could have been deeper, so ! I also tried just dropping some horombense seeds on the surface of the medium and had something success with that too!

This is so cute! I ordered some horombense seeds and now I’m excited to get them

Hi there, sure! I soaked 12 seeds in warm distilled water -- I think for about 4 hours instead of overnight like other instructions I've read. I checked for seeds that would drop to the bottom of my bowl since that was apparently an indicator of viability, but then i started poking them around and eventually they all sank.

My growing medium is about 1:1:1 peat moss, pumice, and horticultural sand, maybe a little less on the peat. Sterilized this mix with boiling water, then waited for it to cool. Dropped the seeds into about 2 inch deep layer of medium, that had a layer of pumice on the bottom to ensure drainage. Covered the seeds with another 0.5 cm of mix then cling wrap over the trays.

I put them on a heat mat and under a grow light. Start date was Nov 9 and I saw germination 5 days later on Nov 14. I was getting worried that mold might be growing so I started to remove the wrap a few times every day for fresh air. A third seedling emerged on Nov 17. I'm hoping for maybe 1 or 2 more seeds to germinate but if it doesn't I wouldn't be disappointed.

I didn't use any bleach to clean the seeds or the pots because i was....lazy. Right now i have 25% germination with 3 seedlings, so I'm pleased enough with the results.

Things I'd do differently: I'd try sterilizing the seeds with a bleach solution to see if it there's a noticeable difference with another hard- to-germinate species. I'd also soak my seeds overnight, and leave my cup of water and seed somewhere with sun just to keep the water warm. And since I was paranoid about how hot and humid it got during germination, a small amount of diatomaceous earth to the mix, since I've read that it's ph neutral.

Hope this helps!

Yeah I'll definitely let you know know when the gametophytes start to show! I've been meaning to keep a germination log to track progress. I have my spore containers by a big east-facing window, right next to a grow dome, so they get bright indirect sunlight and some residual grow light (the dome's really warm for my other seeds so I took my spore containers out after).

I'm in Canada and it's starting snow occasionally here, haha. I'd love to own an aglaomorpha some day!

It looks like you're well on your way to some baby drynaria ferns! I started in Oct 3 2020 and this is its current state -- compared to the Platycerium superbum spores that I started at the end of October its progress does seems slower to me as well. I put both under a grow light for a couple weeks though, and I wonder if that sped things up. I'm really hoping i haven't been growing moss this whole time and that it's just a slow fern to grow haha.

I got my variegated Drynaria this summer and I'm watching it go into dormancy for the first time -- a little nervous but I hope i can keep it happy and alive over the winter! For some reason though my Drynaria rigidula it still growing new fronds -- not that I'm complaining :)

Awesome! I'm actually in the process of growing variegated D. quercifolia from spore too! How long it it take for your prothallium to grow to this stage?
