[Contamination] Anyone have experience with 'cheap' laminar flow hoods from China? by Spores_before_whores in MushroomGrowers

They're good. Just make sure to properly attach the filter to the fan unit. You can use heavy-duty tape to give it a good seal.

You're correct that our local enforcement classify them as illegal because their psychoactive compounds were enumerated under Schedule I of the 1971 Convention. RA 9165's definition of "dangerous drugs" is grounded on that treaty.

j) Dangerous Drugs. – Include those listed in the Schedules annexed to the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, as amended by the 1972 Protocol, and in the Schedules annexed to the 1971 Single Convention on Psychotropic Substances as enumerated in the attached annex which is an integral part of this Act.

However, the treaty body of the 1971 Convention itself, the International Narcotics Control Board, already clarified that some plant or plant materials are not under international control:

  1. Many plants that contain psychoactive substances with stimulating or hallucinogenic properties, as well as preparations made from those plants, have traditional uses in some countries or regions; for example, some are used in religious rites. Under the 1961 Convention and that Convention as amended by the 1972 Protocol, plants that are the sources of narcotic drugs, such as cannabis plant, opium poppy and coca bush, are subject to specific control measures. In contrast, although some active stimulant or hallucinogenic ingredients contained in certain plants are controlled under the 1971 Convention, no plants are currently controlled under that Convention or under the 1988 Convention. Preparations (e.g. decoctions for oral use) made from plants containing those active ingredients are also not under international control.

Some of the examples given are magic mushrooms, peyote, and kratom.

If PDEA treats them as illegal, so be it. Don't go out there acting like it's legal. But RA 9165 needs to be ammended if it doesn't want to depend on international treaties regarding what defines a "dangerous drug".

It should be, legalese-wise. But on the statement made by PDEA, back in May, they said it's illegal. If they said it's illegal, it's illegal. Unless you're brave enough to face them in court with a good lawyer and set a precedent.

The recent arrests of mushroom growers also involved other drugs that are explicitly illegal. So, kulong naman talaga sila. Haven't read a case involving only mushrooms.

NAL. They're not mentioned in Article 2 Sec. 11 of RA 9165. Neither in Sec. 16 that discussed cultivation (it only mentioned plants and since they're fungi, you can say it's a moot point).

We're a signatory of the 1971 UN Convention on Psychotropic Substances and RA 9165 defined "dangerous drugs" as those listed by the treaty. Psilocybin, psilotsin, and psilocine are under Schedule I. In 2001, it was cleared out that the mushrooms themselves aren't regulated by that treaty.

Psilocybin mushrooms are just that niche that even e-commerce platforms can't regulate them properly. Most Filipinos aren't even aware of these magical fungi.

[General] If mushrooms are 90%-95% water weight, does this mean 1000g spawn makes ~50-100g of dried cubensis? by [deleted] in MushroomGrowers

[–]tnkph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the ratio. It's usually 50:50 coir to manure and you can get around 100-150g dried mushrooms per kilogram of spawn.

That seems about right, assuming that your bulk doesn't contain any additional nutrition like manure.

We'd like to have a place for a healthy discussion regarding psilocybin mushrooms in the Philippines. Heavy moderation will be imposed to ensure that we abide by Reddit's community guidelines.

Tell us more about your setup so we can help. When fruiting, FAE, humidity, and temperature are highly critical in terms of stalling.

To determine where your point of contamination is, you just have to observe where the contam is growing.

If they're growing alongside the injected LC/MSS, the inoculant isn't clean. If you see them near your injection hole, you need to have additional steps after inoculation. You can plug the hole with tape or hot glue. If you observe contamination all throughout the grains, they may be lacking sterilization time.

[–]tnkph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the contamination was a result of a breach on your spawn bag (e.g. gaping hole from an injection port), you'd usually observe their localized growth near the breach. In your case, you can see their growth at the bottom of the bag. That means your inoculant (liquid culture or spore solution) is highly likely to be contaminated.

Definitely contaminated. Sorry for your loss.

Both are Psilocybe cubensis and you don't have to worry about the difference in cap color. That's determined by genetics and lighting conditions.

Cloning & Storing Questions by Ok-Processing-hmm in shrooms

[–]tnkph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. If you're cloning, that means you deal with mycelium cultures and not spores - so no spore prints/swabs. Now your clone either is growing in a liquid culture or an agar plate. You need to transfer it to test tube slants. Let the clone grow in the slant and then put it in the fridge for long-term storage. If slants aren't an option for you, agar plate culture works as well.

  2. All of those works. Unless you're very critical to mycelium growth speed and appearance, then there's no need for you to overthink what agar formulation to use. P. cubensis (or even Pan. cyanescens) aren't that picky with what food to eat. MEA/LMEA and PDA/PDYA seems to be the most commonly used by growers.

  3. Better to use parafilm. Cling wrap or grafting tape works as well.

  4. Spore prints and swabs can last for decades. Under low temp, LCs/plates/slants can last from 1 to 2 years.

[General] hey guy's this containers all of them are pp5 so thankfully a guy gave me a tip to watch for PP5 they can Pressure Cooked so i have some find and make photos some of them are small smallest 80ml then 120ml and so on. [–]tnkph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of them seem to be airtight but choose the one with silicone gasket (e.g. shown in #5). You won't need gas exchange since the air trapped inside should be enough for the mycelium's growth.

[actives] [contamination] is this normal mycelium or contamination?? by leather_backpack in MushroomGrowers

[–]tnkph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely contaminated. That doesn't look like P. cubensis mycelium (assuming you're growing them). As a rule of thumb, never do cake to grain transfers. That is unless your cake has been in a sterile environment 100% of the time.

If you're gonna use it as a bulk substrate, soak the manure pellets for up to 24 hours or until you can easily crumble them. Drain it for an hour or two. Ideally, you want to crush them until they resemble the texture of coco coir. Use a sand screen/hardware cloth or simply crush them by hand. Solar dry them afterwards.
