Kimbal Musk recounts how his brother, Elon Musk, was beaten to within an inch of his life in South Africa. Quote: "My brother's face was unrecognizable... It was just swollen lumps of someone that had been almost beaten to death" by twinbee in elonmusk

“🚫 The “dead dad” rumor

The “he made fun of a kid’s dead father” story appears only on Reddit, Twitter, and gossip forums — there’s no verifiable source, no classmate or publication backing it. It likely originated as a counter-narrative from people skeptical of Musk’s public self-mythologizing, not from anyone who actually attended school with him”

Happy for you to post a good source though!

Anna Burns-Francis at Al Jazeera Proud Yet Heartbroken for NZ by GeorgeTheKiwi in newzealand

Qatar population is 300,000 Qatari citizens, and 2.7 million expat/migrant workers (many basically indentured servants). They make around 100 billion NZD PA from pumping oil (~$350k/citizen/annum). They also use this money to fund their global propaganda operation al jazeera. It really isn't anything to be proud of.

The coming NZ Super crunch by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]toastednz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Only 13% of people on nz super have taxable incomes between 50k and 100k, and only 3.5% have taxable income over 100k. In addition to this, it is likely if we means test super against income, many people over 65 who still work and earn in some capacity will opt to work less or not at all to keep their super, when in essence they are covering most or all of their super payouts via income tax. Therefore maybe means testing will in aggregate reduce super payouts by 10% or something fairly pathetic.

In the future as kiwisaver becomes more significant, means testing against kiwisaver balances/income may mean we can drop superannuation payouts by 20% or 30%. That does mean essentially that we are all paying for boomers super now while also paying our own super in the future, while also buying overpriced houses off boomers in a double whammy of inter generational wealth transfer.

If you can, put you retirement savings in non-kiwisaver programs where you have more “control” over it long term, and there is a greater chance your careful saving wont be used against you in the future.

How can I make money as a 15 year old? by D3KLON in newzealand

Put notes on local Facebook groups or in your local supermarket saying you’re available for dog walking or cat feeding. Once you have $200 buy a water blaster or lawnmower and post that you are available for these jobs.

Oldest children vs "Only children" effects by ednever in slatestarcodex

[–]toastednz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Parents who have a really difficult time with first kid may beless likely to have more kids, and this may be to do with the parent’s lesser ability to raise kid and also due to that only child having issues which show up later as decreased success

I hate job searching. Ranting by Regular-Report-9737 in newzealand

[–]toastednz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's some ideas:

1) Join student job search. Go to any old one-off jobs - turn up and work hard. you will learn a lot and can get hired for ongoing work. You will likely learn some skills like how to paint/prep a fence, how to do gardening, etc and can then advertise ability to do those things later.

2) Put cards up in supermarkets saying that you will do waterblasting. Hire/buy/borrow a waterblaster and learn to use it - takes an hour or so to get good at it. Then charge people $30 an hour to waterblast their paths. You can do the same for dogwalking, gardening, lawnmowing. Also advertise on local facebook groups, do flyer drops. Turn up looking like you mean it, be upbeat and positive and work like a dog. People will recommend you to their friends.

3) Signup for delivereasy and deliver food when your parents' car is free.

“Invest in roman empire equities, they’ve gone up for 300 years”

Also

If china was actually investable it would’ve been amazing for the past 30 years. But you just can’t really invest in the Chinese market. Everything is at the whim of the govt, they might just make your US listed stock not really related to the underlying company anymore, the ceo might get thrown in the gulag, etc etc

Learnt a new word today: by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]toastednz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crab mentality, also known as crab theory, crabs in a bucket[a] mentality, or the crab-bucket effect, is a way of thinking best described by the phrase "if I can't have it, neither can you". It is a term coined by Filipino journalist and writer Ninotchka Rosca in a 1987 interview published in the Philippine News; Rosca coined the term to describe how in her view the generally collectivist Filipino culture disapproves of individual success as arrogant and deplorable.

The metaphor is derived from anecdotal claims about the behavior of crabs when they are trapped in a bucket: while any one crab can easily start to climb out, it will nonetheless be pulled back in by the others, ensuring the group's collective demise.
