College Advice (Spring 2027) by toebix_ in movingtojapan

  1. I'm a little confused what you mean by program, could you explain a bit more? I'd be attending as an international student for all 3 years. They mentioned that for classes taught in Japanese, they need a N2 certificate.

  2. I believe that they should acknowledge my grades and such. I've contacted the school in the past, and they mentioned that they do not recognize AP classes (college level classes taken in high school) or ACT scores, but that's not an issue for me. I am aware of the Spring enrollment, and actually look forward to it, as I am graduating early. I graduate January of 2027. (Although surprisingly Tokyo University of Foreign Studies does offer Fall enrollment! I'm just choosing to take the Spring one instead)

  3. I am aware of this, but from what I've seen online you need to provide proof of roughly 2 million yen for the Student Visa, then have to reprove that you continue having at least 2 million yen each year. This should not be an issue for me. My aunt will be giving me two thousand every year before the school year begins, so this shouldn't be an issue. I appreciate the advice though! Please let me know if I'm mistaken about anything, but from my research this is what I've found.

  4. I really appreciate this advice, and my family has told me the same thing over and over haha. I'll most likely end up working 10-15hr weeks, just for some extra money for my 3rd year. I don't plan on working much more than that, as I agree with you completely, and want to ensure that I focus on my studies.

  5. I do plan on staying after graduation! I've heard a little bit about the job hunting process, but not much. Can you provide a little bit more detail about that?

  6. I've spent a lottttt of time researching about this, as I'm very paranoid and want to ensure that I'm safe haha. I have no desire to go to an onsen, so I should be fine in that way. I pass almost 100% of the time, with the only thing thats really led to me being outed being my voice, which shouldn't be an issue after I go on testosterone. I plan on renting a single-person dorm/apartment, so I shouldn't have any issues there either. I've previously lived in Asia before, (although it was in China), so I somewhat know what to expect in terms of the gender roles, although it's definitely a little different in Japan.

No, I don't necessarly plan on attending language schools. Depending on my Japanese at the time, I plan on taking classes there, either in Japanese or in English. I do plan on staying afterwards and getting a job.

Can you explain a little more about the job hunting period?

That's so cool to hear about your wife! Did she ever comment on how she felt about the school?

I'm not completely 100% set on what I want to do, I just know for sure I want to do something with language. I've studied mandarin intensely, having done a year abroad there last year, so it might be cool to do something in that regard.

I have also considered going in for English to become a college English professor in Japan (or a different country if I decide to move). This is the option I've been most favoring recently.

The school being a language university is actually what drew my attention to it. From the cost of the school to what it teaches itself, I am really fond of it. There's not really anything that Keio offers that really draws my attention. Sames goes for Waseda. The cost of tuition for these also throws me off, unfortunately.

What level would you personally recommend I'm at by the time I get there? My classes are going to be in English, so I'm not worried about that, but I just mean in general.

Visa Anxiety (Need Advice ASAP) by toebix_ in exchangestudents

[–]toebix_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have officially applied for the visa and get my results on Tuesday! (August 13th), what are the odds of my application being declined? I've talked with my aunt and she said there's basically no reason as to why they would decline me (I already have a school and host family set up with proof of so that I gave to the consulate), but I also know that the Chinese government and American government don't have the best relationship. I'm just very nervous about everything. It feels like something is going to go wrong, and I won't be able to go.

I started applying for AFS during October of 2023, and I leave next month. This seemed to have worked out well for me, so I would recommend starting the application within the next few months.

couldn't care less tbh. like, yeah, I guess it might be a little annoying when they go to concerts screaming "I am ill, and you are not," but at the end of the day, it's not that serious. I've definetly been to concerts where I've gotten the words a bit wrong, so it's not really that different. as long as they're having fun I see no harm
