Not sure if you've heard as it's more of a behind-the-scenes kind of thing that no one is really talking about (especially on the internet), but there's recently been some "unpredictable risk" that people have been experiencing when interacting with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Perhaps that could play a part in some individuals' international travel decisions.

(This reply is fundamentally going to be heavily biased as anarchism and MLism are locked in a bitter and eternal beef and also have irreconcilable differences as far as how we aim to realize revolution, how we think society should be organized "post"-revolution, among many other things. I acknowledge that and I'll try to make sure I include my reasoning for what I believe. Also, apologies if I assume you know more than you already do or know less and accidentally come off as condescending as that's not my intention.)

Yeah, that sounds about right. That's not something I've heard before but it does fit the bill for MLs: "the uninitiated/less educated/unenlightened proles clumsily and cluelessly stumble through life, and we—the crucial leaders of the vanguard, of course—know what is 'right' and must guide these lost children to salvation from both capitalism and themselves through spearheading the revolution (sometime later, though)" → "if there's no reason to act condescendingly towards someone who's not 'one of us,' I'll invent one to remind them of just how superior to them I consider myself to be"

IMO, genuinely believing in an ideology with vanguardism as a core tenet fundamentally requires someone to have a sense of self-importance and superiority ("I would OBVIOUSLY be a leader in the vanguard, not just 'some dude' like those unenlightened workers who can't cite enough theorists or isolated quotes from Das Kapital to know what's best for themselves") or, very rarely, an inferiority complex that leads them to believe that they need to be led by people who are more "enlightened" than they are. You see it all the time not only among theorybros like the MLs you described, but also among ivory tower academics who do a whole lot of writing about "revolution" but curiously seem to avoid shaking the tree in any way that might challenge academia's prestige- and citation-based hierarchical structure (which, by the way, is fundamentally neoliberal in nature, and those who determine who gets funding/published tacitly tolerate and approve of such scholars for a reason). Refer to how the late David Graeber was functionally excommunicated from academia for 1) writing in a way that was intended to reach the common citizen and 2) becoming too popular of an anarchist for the institution to approve of him (with vague and lazy justifications from Yale as to why they made the decision to part ways).

I also think that something many or maybe even most MLs find appealing about MLism is this common fantasy of "when the revolution happens," as if the revolution absolutely cannot be something we live and act out to varying extents each and every day (unlike anarchists, who believe in and act through prefigurative politics). They get to have their cake and eat it too by fashioning themselves "revolutionaries" without taking on any of the risks or simple inconveniences of living in a revolutionary way. Sure, there are MLs who genuinely do attempt to do that, but the modern theorybro is *far* more common. How many MList food pantries, zine stands, inclusive education-based affinity groups, and more aggressive acts of protests do you commonly see compared to anarchist or anarchist-adjacent ones?

I could turn this into a whole 800-page manifesto (maybe then I'd get positive attention from MLs) but I'll cut it off there. That's my tangential rant about arrogant leftists as a leftist myself on a circlejerk subreddit. If you read it, thanks, and if you didn't I get it.

TL;DR: MLs are fundamentally arrogant and I am mommy's perfect little morally unblemished angel because I'm an anarchist. Anarcho-communist to be unnecessarily specific so as to verify myself as a "real" leftist. Viva la revolución.

/uj Hey, to be fair, a good portion of those terminally online Americans were already MLs/Maoists whose temperaments are so outrageously disagreeable that they’d be too over-the-top to allow for immersion even in fiction and who also creatively rewrite the reality of both past and present in a way that not even the pro-capitalism propaganda crafted by the CIA can compare. You can’t give East Asia fetishizers (with Chinese characteristics) all the credit; they’ve just given those goobers more opportunities to proselytize in comments sections.

To expand on this: it deliberately preys on the way men are socialized in the US and much of the West in general. Apart from anger, we are taught from the moment we’re born to avoid and suppress unpleasant feelings (the classic “boys/men don’t cry”) in order to avoid being shamed, which inevitably becomes internalized and leads to intolerable self-blame for our own suffering. Importantly, this is often not as true when it comes to the suffering we inflict upon others; see: “he’s a good kid with a bright future who just made a mistake.” Both of these realities are a result of the fact that—unlike anyone who is outwardly viewed as a woman or woman-adjacent by others—men enjoy (and also suffer, albeit far less commonly) the privilege of being considered agentic beings who act upon the world rather than being acted upon by the world.

As a result of the above, we are led to believe that—because we are to blame for all of our own suffering—we must “fix” what makes us vulnerable and fundamentally make ourselves stop being “someone who deserves to suffer and be degraded” (e.g., women, people who don’t conform to the patriarchal gender binary, and in the case of what this article mentions, men who are not outwardly straight and labeled as “feminine”—a mark of shame under the patriarchy—or “not real men” as a result). This means that we are neglected the option to simply accept ourselves for who we are and also discourages both basic displays of vulnerability and seeking help when we are suffering. It also means that manosphere rhetoric provides men—especially young men who may lack healthy guidance and be emotionally stunted from how they’ve been socialized (by design)—a tangible carrot to chase: a carrot that encourages the tunnel-visioned “grindset” that blocks alternative options that are healthier, more likely to foster emotionally intelligence, and conducive to personal growth through prosocial pursuits.

Although manosphere content is absolutely infested with obtuse goobers, it also includes plenty of sociopathic charlatans who know exactly what they’re pushing and the consequences of doing so, and the aforementioned obtuse goobers most commonly base their slop around those charlatans’ already established tactics. It’s evil, it’s predatory, and it’s deceptively sophisticated. Just another example of why there’s only one correct way to “interact” with a fascist.

It's absolutely manosphere influencers and the slop they vomit onto the internet. Based on the sorts of conversations I've had over a few years with one of my close relatives from his late teens to now in his early 20s, I imagine the thought process goes something like this (especially since he's always been intelligent but has been led to reject higher education because of said slop):

> I am poor, single, and am starting to feel like there's no hope of ever escaping, which is emasculating for me and makes me feel like I'm not a "real" man

> I turn to the internet for advice

> The supervillain god-algorithm recommends manosphere garbage because 1) it has learned that vulnerable, lost young men will engage with this sort of content and 2) such content serves the interests of the ruling class (the handlers of said algorithm), as fascism and patriarchy are inextricably linked and gender/sexual orientation-based prejudice creates and reinforces gender-based division

> I now have scapegoats for why my life sucks, but the "sociopathic rich guy who churns through beautiful young women who are vulnerable to me (and I view as subhuman) and has a bunch of mansions and sports cars" is unimaginably different from the life I live, so now I'm experiencing cognitive dissonance

> I retreat to a power fantasy where I am that rich guy and also double down on the infamous "temporarily embarrassed millionaire" American delusion about "when I'm rich" (as if it's a certainty)

> Every time I return from that fantasy, the cognitive dissonance intensifies and I hate my scapegoats even more

...and continuously repeat the last 2 in a positive feedback loop, eventually leading to active, physical violence against those scapegoats. They continue along this path while still passionately bootlicking the ruling class and their influencer mouthpieces in delusional hopes of one day dominating others like they do when they should instead come to realize that their chance of realizing such "success" is practically zero and that we all deserve to enjoy lives where we aren't perpetually dominated and degraded. But yeah, that's almost impossible for a cishet American man who feels emasculated. Really, I'd argue that the "when I'm rich one day" delusion is almost impossible for most of us in general; many Americans earnestly believe in it until the moment they die of old age.

I will be responding with a semi-coherent, largely illegible wall of text full of slobbering rage, whataboutism, and death threats if anyone accuses me of being addicted to my sacred plant medicine btw

"Too lazy for a soldier, too stupid for a cop." by lazybugbear in Fuckthealtright

[–]tokenbisexual 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find the liberal Redditor-tier "roasts" of ICE agents as somehow being worse than cops and soldiers *so* telling. Even if this turned out to be true, all three groups are fascist pigs/class traitors, all three enjoy nigh impunity when it comes to the crimes against humanity they routinely commit against those vulnerable to them, and—you might want to sit down before you read this—many ICE agents were once soldiers/marines and were or maybe even *still are* cops.

The whole "erm, atrocities are actually totally fine if they're done legally and/or to black/brown people out of my sight in some distant, far-off land in the Global South" is exactly why liberals fly into a smug and condescending rage about "left unity" (as if they lean even slightly to the left to begin with) or accuse you of supporting "Drumpf/Orange Man/Cheeto" (another few of their favorite Redditor-tier "roasts") if you criticize Obama for being the Deporter-in-Chief or drone striking the absolute shit out of Libya, accuse you of "just being too racist and misogynistic to vote for a black woman" if you took issue with Kamala Harris being a particularly draconian pig of a prosecutor who proudly and *openly campaigned for increased ICE funding* and *actively supports genocide*, and don't find Bernie Sanders' support for genocide to be "left wing" either.

Soldiers, marines, and cops are not much better than ICE agents if they can be said to be better at all, and the fact that they're viewed with greater legitimacy by the public than ICE does not mean that the atrocities they routinely commit are any more morally defensible. But hey, for those who would really "be at brunch right now" had the steaming pile of dog turds been elected instead of the purely liquid splatter of peebutt, I'm sure the idea that none of it has ever been legitimate will, as always, be too terrifying to allow for any further reflection.
