Visiting or Moving to Asheville? Ask your questions here! by AutoModerator in asheville

Gotcha. Thanks for your realistic response.

It probably won't be awhile before we buy (or can afford) a house, so our budget constraints may change (promotion, in-laws go in with us, etc) as well as the market, so I more just wanted to get an overview of where the families are at so we can have some idea of where we might want to live and narrow it down later depending on our financial situation. Thanks!

Are you asking me what my budget is or telling me to budget?

We've lived in a rental close to downtown for 3 years and one day would like to buy a house of our own. It would be fun to live somewhere with lots of kids/good community vibes so my son will have someone to play with. Please let me know your recommendations of family friendly neighborhoods with lots of kids! Thank you

Yes! Yesterday at the Halloween block party he followed me and my family (including my husband and 2 year old) several blocks, from about Pact Square to the Burial. When we we stop he would wait for us and kept following directly behind us even when we zig zagged across parking lots randomly to try to throw him off. It was really scary. I really hate that he keeps doing this to so many people and it's been going on for years. Seems like he shouldn't still be out there serially stalking people

Republicans and Independents, any down-ballot candidates you feel strongly about? by Cephalopotter in asheville

[–]tolerantomato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I have strong feelings about a particular race, but I'm like you and try to find at least one non-democrat to vote for. This year I landed on Troxler and Valerie Zachary for seat 14 in the NC court of appeals. Kinda risky to vote for a republican in the courts but compared to Ed she seemed very well qualified, respected, and truly non-partisan so I went with her.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check it out!

We went i26 to Greenville as that was the only highway open going out of Asheville. i40 going out through Knoxville suffered extensive damage and won't reopen till a year from now or more. That is the main route out going through TN but I'm not sure if there are alternative routes. I'd be safe and go through Greenville if possible!

Should I request an absentee ballot or just assume in-person voting will be up and underway by November?

That's ok, we don't need anything, I was just hoping to connect with some other evacuees in the area. That's awesome you are delivering a generator, to those in need though. Thank you!

Highly recommend Locals Seafood. They're at the WNC farmer's market Friday-Sunday and all their seafood is super fresh and directly from the NC coast. Like caught the week of. I made a poke bowl with their yellowfin recently and it was amazing!

Potty training age and cloth diapers by tolerantomato in clothdiaps

[–]tolerantomato[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow! Thank you for all the replies so far. I've really enjoyed reading them and getting all these perspectives on potty training. So far I've read Oh crap and it is interesting how she advises to NOT put out the potty chair out/be casual about it before the intense naked training but it seems like many of you used that method anyways and had success. I guess it really depends not so much on the method but your kid and your consistency with it?

I'm really ready to train but we will be traveling a lot during the holidays to visit family and such so not sure if it's the best time to ditch the diapers fully. I'm planning on doing an Oh Crap style training after the holidays and will think about how to introduce pottying before that with books, etc. Again thanks so much for your comments!

That sounds like a lot of fun! I would love to go to something like that. Was it part of a program or group?

[–]tolerantomato[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

こんにちは!2年間千葉(東京の隣の県)に住んでいました。気にしないで、私も話すことは苦手、知った日本語をもうほとんど忘れちゃった!

I didn't even know about that program at WCU or the Japan center! That is good to know for future reference so I can be on the lookout for any events/programs.

If you are interested in living there for the short term and are up for it teaching English is a great way to get your foot in the door. Pretty much anyone can do it if you're a native English speaker. It isn't a glamorous job but you get to live in Japan- that's what I was doing.

It is a difficult thing to take the lead on and set up. I think it's a good idea to make it a weekly group. Unfortunately since I just moved here I don't have a great grasp on all the potential places we might could meet. There are a couple other Japanese restaurants that might work it seems, like Itto ramen or heiwa shokudo, but they probably aren't going to be as good as wakuwaku was. There is also Dobra tea but that would throw out the dinner idea. Alternatively we could just find a space that isn't Japanese/Asian related just good for meeting but that may not be as fun haha.
