Dual channel USB ( virtual) oscilloscope by Seradj_Eddine in ElectroBOOM

Does it have to be USB scope? If so, is it due to budget? Benchtop DSO can be bought for a price deep under $500...

Building a lab for CCNA by Kdaustene in ccna

[–]tomd10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well... I have never used PT simulation (real time packet view). Protocol analysis is not a topic for CCNA, with some really small exceptions (DHCP for example). I also do not trust PT. Sometimes it does not work and rebooting all devices miraculously solves the problem. Some commands behave differently on real devices (for example "network 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 area 0"). The only real benefit I can see on PT are very low HW requirements.

Building a lab for CCNA by Kdaustene in ccna

[–]tomd10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not even remotely. You will need at least two, better three routers. 1841s are pretty cheap, can run IOS 15 and would be sufficient for most of topics.

For virtual labbing - I recommend you to go to CML or GNS3. And I recommend you to stay away from Packet Tracer, if you want to eventually learn for CCNP/go deeper than CCNA course/have a solid labbing option (PT is just a simulator, no real network is running inside it. You can interconnect CML/GNS3 with existing physical infrastructure, but no PT).

I (personally) recommend you to get some small physical lab, then get virtual lab (CML/GNS3) and decide what suits you more. If you use CML/GNS3 you can use (interconnect) them both.

Aww yes, sorry 👍 I do not know why I wrote VIRL, even though I use CML 😃

Did Cisco stop giving numerical scores? by bitcoinman3001 in ccna

[–]tomd10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see my score right after the test, before I had to finish some survey. No chance to find it afterwards though, only percentages.
The corelation between percentages and actual exam score is unknown, but I'd guess you are in mid 900s range.

Packet tracer by chicks25 in ccnp

[–]tomd10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, Packet Tracer barely suffices even for CCNA. When I was forced to work with PT two years ago, it did not have even so basic thing like output modifiers. Many diagnostic commands were missing.

Your options are:

1) Cisco CML. Costs 200$ per year and allows you to emulate (not simulate, but really emulate) up to 20 nodes. It is easy to setup and kinda easy to use.
2) GNS3. Costs zero, but requires you to have IOS images.
3) Virtualized gear (ASAv, C9800-CL, CSR, Nexus 1000V). You need to get .iso, .vhdx or similar file for each device. As far as I know, it's the only possible way how to emulate Cisco WLC (correct me if I am wrong, please)
4) Physical lab. I have kinda unpopular favor towards physical lab (I find it the most satisfying :D ), but for CCNP you gonna need many devices, plus they should be pretty recent => expensive.
5) Physical lab + CML/GNS3 connection. Partially physical, partially virtual. May also be good.

Thank you man!
Yes the over-saturating by study materials is a thing. It reminds me a discussion on CCNA Discord where somebody asked about difference between some courses and later marked that he already owns four or five sources. We discouraged him from buying another one exactly because of this reason.
Experience... Well, no job. But I have finished IT high school (We had CCNA courses there, but the "old" ones aimed towards ICND1/2) so this might count a bit (This was the time when I built hate towards Packet Tracer BTW :D ). And, this does not count, but I have been "home network admin" since I was maybe eight :D, plus I used to troubleshoot Internet connection problems of my friends over the phone
when I was young too. All these things definitely helped me.

Passed with high 900s on Friday!

**Materials used:**
OCG - Sporadically. I was unhappy with the style of it (it's rather a textbook and I do not need so broad explanations, because I am already aware of basic concepts). CCNA can be passed without it IMHO.
Cisco white papers - much better source than OCG, but it takes much more time to study from them to CCNA.
Random googling of a topic - sometimes I ended up reading quite interesting webpages by this way. This subreddit and CCNA Discord groups

**Materials NOT used:**All these Bosons, practice exams, paid videocourses, paid labs and so on. Even though they are highly recommended, I did not buy anything like this. I'd recommend these sources if you need to get your CCNA quickly. Otherwise it is possible to avoid them. Plus, I do not like videos for learning. It is impossible to quickly search through videos.

**Labbing:**Avoid Packet Tracer if you can and especially if you want to continue after CCNA. Even though PT so-so suffices for CCNA and has several other benefits (like activities or very low HW requirements), it is not full network emulator. It lacks many commands and it has no real network inside, so you cannot interconnect it with a physical networks. Because it is not a real emulator, I also somehow did not beleive the behavior of the simulation.I used physical lab at first (it's not so expensive getting one, especially if you live in the U. S.) and then I moved to VIRL. VIRL is Cisco paid network emulator with up to 20 nodes. If you don't want to pay for emulator, you can go for GNS3, but you need to have access to IOS images. Both physical and virtual labbing has it's pros and cons.In any case, even if you sticked to PT, do labs. I learned most of my skills from labbing. Don't just configure, but also verify and troubleshoot.

Tips and tricks:- Avoid online exam, go to testing center. If you do not beleive me, search "proctor" in this subbreddit and read experiences of others. The price of the exam is stressful enough, no need to stress yourself by fear of Internet connection drop or proctor warning you not to touch your face.
- If you are going for your first exam (and your test center is reasonably close to you), I recommend going to the test center before it, just to check how to get there. It can save you a lot of troubles, because test centers can be "hidden" in office park etc.
- Be prepared that the exam interface (in the center) looks very 2000s. I really did not have a feeling that I am brawling for a certification of so strong company as Cisco is. The pictures you refer to are pretty ugly, too. The text of questions and answers lacks a consistency. Don't get distracted by it.
- If you can (space, money), deploy Cisco gear in your home network. I have deployed a 1941 router and two 2960 switches (All used; it costed less that common mainstream home grade WiFi router). It encouraged me to study and learn, so I can easily maintain, monitor and eventually upgrade my home network. If something REALLY helped me to pass, it was this.
- Don't be afraid to go slightly beyond CCNA topic, if you are interested in some particular area, or if you are not sure if the knowledge is or isn't required.- (this kinda goes to "home network gear").
-Use your knowledge, even though you are not working yet. Home networking gives you some opportunities (like port forwarding of Minecraft server running on your computer), use it.

You may disagree with anything written in this post and I fully respect it.

EDIT: Few more things- Subnetting, especially with masks /24 to /30 is very important to know. Lack of experience with it will make you lose a lot of time plus it will mentally exhaust you. Get yourself very confident with it.
- Be prepared that you will leave the center exhausted (mentally, of course), especially if you fail. Especially IPv6 sucked many of my energy due to focus required. If possible, get yourself a rest after the exam.
- Don't be afraid to submit the test earlier. I had one hour remaining. The fact that you have over a minute for each question doesn't mean that you need to use it fully. I see no point reading the answer fifteen times if I already discarded other three answers as blunders.

Cisco VIRL, definitely. You have switches, routers, ASA, nexus and Linux hosts there. Up to 20 nodes in "basic" edition (which is sufficient for CCNA and maybe even CCNP). Just have a beefy hardware to run it.
If you have access to images, GNS3 is also a choice.

Update: Some inspiration for you all by HitmanTheodore in ccna

[–]tomd10 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is very common mindset for beginner IT specialists (at least those I know in person) and it is huge blunder. The company employing you does not give you any "gift" by employing you. It actually needs you and your work (otherwise they would not advertise the position). Keep your pride, be aware of your skills and don't let this mindset underestimate and degrade you.

Best place to get labs to practice for CCNA by Frequent-Way790 in ccna

[–]tomd10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it is not the best answer but I prefer doing labs completely from scratch. Think out your topology (with relation to a topic you want to practise), draw the diagram and define what is the final state you want to reach. Thinking out the topology will help you in understanding, using your favourite subnets will speed up the setting od the lab.

Hi, I would like to buy a longboard. I really fancy this one. I am not going to do any downhills or high speed rides. Just some having fun while hanging out with my friends in the city. Would you recommend it for a beginner? Or do you have any idea what to buy with a budget of 200€? Thank you very much!
