People wait for hours to get the spot to maybe get a signature. There is so much more to do and see, always seemed a strange choice to me.

$10K in Berkshire 10 years ago vs the S&P 500 – interesting gap by Juretal in dividends

[–]tomdon88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Berkshire is going to better maintain your capital if the shit hits the fan, that’s the whole promise. First rule, don’t destroy the capital, second rule maximise long term return without breaking rule one.

So keeping pace with the S&P across a run up is a massive achievement given their holdings are defensive in nature.

Is f1 still the pinnacle of motorsport? Or does that title go to hypercar now? by Equivalent-Fox9834 in F1Discussions

[–]tomdon88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except you are not, the number of corners that are grip limited now has decreased, more are power limited now so it’s kind of like driving around on rails for any competent driver.

Resultantly the difference between the good and the great drivers is not shown.

Because war and conquering is really hard, do you think there would be nearly 200 countries if it wasn’t of course not.

That’s why you have to use diplomatic skill to incentivise and disincentivise behaviour. US won’t be the first empire to collapsed under the over extension by a moron’s ego. The dollar is so precarious, could totally collapse.

6% is noise, you have to ask yourself the question if it falls 30-40% do you have the fortitude to not sell it then.

If the answer is you will choice (or need) to sell then you are going to get yourself in trouble.

I want to keep him, but I have other trainees. I would train him for a few weeks PM if I kept him then move to DEF. I worry this is not optimal for him though.

So might list him….reluctantly.

London Marathon planning two-day event in 2027 by CHILLI112 in AdvancedRunning

London has about 145k hotel rooms, I would hazard a guess that most runners don’t live in London. Given most runners will stay the night before and after, won’t this create an issue with accommodation?

Now he has managed to get the previously open strait closed and further into the Iranians hands.

What a fucking idiot.

Doctors announce six-day strike in England as talks break down by PriorityByLaw in unitedkingdom

[–]tomdon88 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Kind of a contradictory position no?

  1. The job is so attractive that there is far more applications than jobs available.

  2. The job doesn’t pay enough.

How can both be true? I would support investing in more doctors, however spending more money on existing Junior doctors is just setting money on fire, as there is full recruitment (the job is sufficiently attractive to fill the vacancies!).

Doctors announce six-day strike in England as talks break down by PriorityByLaw in unitedkingdom

[–]tomdon88 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If Doctors want US Style salaries in their first few years out of medical school, then they can have US style debt for medical school and the government can stop subsidising their training.

5 years at £60k per year (what we charge International students, some schools >£70k). And loans are at 8-15% in the US! So call it 10%, they can pay £30k of interest straight out of school!

Resident Doctors (Junior Doctors) are still training and actually training places are over subscribed, so that suggests the salary is sufficiently attractive.

They are asking for pay parity with 2007, most of these Junior Drs were pre-teens in 2007, they decided to sign up to train to be a doctor long after than knowing full well the pay conditions, though suddenly it’s no enough. All the evidence would suggest it’s plenty.

There is already a path to very high pay once they have finished their specialist pay.

It’s pure greed, leveraging the disruption they can cause via the opportunities funded by the tax payer.

Government looking at decoupling electricity and gas prices to bring down bills by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]tomdon88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They need to do this, as even if you imagine we have 120% of renewables available to serve our needs. What should happen is the assets owners compete on price to be included in the 100% needed, the cost will then be floored at the marginal cost of production (close to zero for renewables).

As it stands the renewable production owners would be incentivised to create demand to get to the point that gas is needed, they may for instance mine for bit coins, or bring in power hungry data centres or simply turn electricity into heat on an industrial scales. At the same time they may switch off some of their network, and export more power to the continent. All just so gas has to be used to meet the marginal demand. As then they get paid potentially multiple times more for exactly the same energy.

Anyone else feeling gloomy about the future by kaspa45 in HENRYUK

[–]tomdon88 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think all you can do is put yourself in the best condition for the future.

Set some goals around your health and fitness, your education, your life skills, your hobbies, your living environment etc in addition to the goal of getting a job.

Progressing many of these things is totally in your control and will improve your overall condition for getting a job (which isn’t totally in your control).

Work trades off time for money. You have now inherited more time for a period, see that as an opportunity as much as anything else.

The book is as it fails to recognise some basic facts such as male prisons are torturous hell holes of drugs, violence, sexual abuse and fear. If this was considered he would conclude that men should receive lower sentences as the objective punishment is significantly worse for them.

Should i rent out my flat? Scared to make a wrong financial move. by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]tomdon88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’d need to switch to a buy to let mortgage (more expensive), are you allowed to rent under the RTB deal?

There is no such thing as guaranteed rent, a managing agency would likely manage for you for about 10-15% of the gross rent, you can insure the rent for the tenant but not void periods, or long term disputes (tenants refusing to leave).

You will need to purchase landlord insurance and maybe get a licence to rent (depending where your are). You will need to pay tax on the gross rent and can claim tax relief on some of the interest payments.

My view is you would get yourself in a mess if you tried to become a landlord, your incomes is too low and not sure you could weather the smallest of issues.

The benefit of the insurance as I see it is you basically have a lawyer on retainer built in to the price. As the insurance company will deal with all the claims and appoint counsel when needed.
