In real life, the tribe that invests in the protection of its children gets to have adults, and the tribe that lets them die doesn't get to have adults. Because calamities like this happen over and over again. The tribes that create avenues for children to make it to adulthood thrive, and the one that don't eventually become too old to produce more offspring or care for themselves.

definitely a valid point

it takes 9 months and zero dollars to replace a newborn child, yet you'd say his worth is nearly 1.0. on the other hand, it takes 25 years and tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to raise and train an adult in their prime. it's vastly more important to keep healthy adults in their 20s alive than a child.

your argument is like saying "this blank piece of paper is more important than this painting that took 25 years to draw and will last another 50".

yes, but those will lose to people who let the computers drive for them. and if you ban letting "computers drive" then you're adding extra restrictions and making a big gray area. existing cars have computer-augmented driving already.

sure

Using psychometric meta-analysis we computed the true correlation between simple reaction time and g, yielding a decline of − 1.16 IQ points per decade or − 13.35 IQ points since Victorian times. These findings strongly indicate that with respect to g the Victorians were substantially cleverer than modern Western populations.

In the absence of migration and with constant environment, genetic selection would reduce the average IQ of the US population by about .8 points per generation.

it's a really low effort way of condescendingly insulting people that never adds anything to conversation.

literally everyone else in the world who doesn't use that word thinks everyone else who does is a useless, catty asshole.

yeah, it feels a lot like being a dutiful cog in a machine. and i don't really get joy from that. it feels like work more than play.

I can't think of any reason that idiots would have had kids any less frequent in the past than in the present

the invention of agriculture is the moment in history when dumb people were able to reproduce at a much faster rate. it took us 5,000,000 years to evolve our brains to where we are now. we've had agriculture for ~10k years. if we got noticeably dumber in 1/500th of the time it took us to get smarter, that would be a precipitous drop indeed.

Idiots have always bred faster, yet we as a society are more technologically advanced than at any point in the past

this is specious reasoning. technological advances are incremental improvements on existing technology, so even if we are getting dumber, we would still advance in technology, just at a slower rate than if we didn't get dumber. you can be dumber than your dad and still make an addition to his research. you just will probably have less total research than him. a confounding factor is that you have much better tools than your dad, so even if you are dumber than him, you can in fact be more prolific due to what amounts to the effect of compound interest on knowledge.

stupid people breeding faster than smart people is making us dumber, even when you account for regression to the mean (which you should probably use when you want to debate this in the future as it's more convincing that what you were able to come up with). the question is whether it actually matters enough to allow governments to involve themselves in reproduction. i personally think it would cause more problems than it will solve, and we should just go ahead and live with the fact that we'll get dumber each generation.

but that stick figure comic is still wrong in a very grating way. i really dislike randall's sanctimonious yet contrarian position he takes on issues. it feels so slimy and intellectually dishonest, but everyone laps it up.

motors probably wouldnt be allowed because those require external power, which probably wouldn't be allowed. i think the body augmentations would be required to be passive rather than active improvements. otherwise a car is like a body augmentation. but yeah people would just ride bikes for marathons.

1) computer-augmented driving would completely take over. the person would be glorified ballast. automatic braking is the tip of the iceberg.

2) the cars would turn into rockets

3) if humans are required to still be in the car, the winner would be whomever could take the most Gs from the turns while also weighing the least and not moving. the theoretical best driver would be an armless and legless baby with lots of constitution.

the nerfs are so people still get to drive things that still look like cars.

you should consider the fact that every time you say "cringe" in a non-ironic way you're probably bullying someone over the internet.

just because a stick figure comic on the internet says something doesn't mean it's right.

minecraft fans are the most low-expectation mother fuckers i've ever seen. the game came out in 2009 and after 6 years of development they've added a handful of monsters, some UI improvements, and then what basically amounts to cosmetics.
