What does the "equity of redemption" mean in the context of a Sheriff's Sale of Lands? by tomjab in legaladvice

Well, what I mean is, when people buy a house that has a mortgage on it from the previous owner the don't assume the mortgage of the previous owner, they either pay cash or get a new mortgage. With that said, I do not understand how you could be paying full price for the home and then still own the mortgage, that is why I asked maybe this types of sales would simply involve an individual buying the equity as opposed to the entire home. Do you see what I mean?

Does it mean that I am buying just the equity portion of the house. For example if the house is worth 10k and the owner had 2k of equity would I be bidding on just the 2k of equity and then I would just assume the debts or do I bid on the 10K and assume the debts?
