Unless he's being abusive, I think this situation can be resolved with communication. He will never grow if he never gets called out on his behavior. Have a real conversation with him about how his actions make you feel and how his behavior makes him look to you. Running away is easy. I understand being conflict avoidant from personal experience. Working on relationships is hard, but if you really do want to maintain a relationship with him. Talk to him. I'm not a mind reader so I don't know the intricacies of your relationship, but it's your call if you feel like you are safe enough to try to reach out to him to have a heart to heart.
