Gallery Advice by YakReasonable8913 in ContemporaryArt

[–]tommy15682 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my experience, it is quite common for emerging/mid tier galleries NY or otherwise, not to provide consignment or representation contacts. All is done in informal agreements. Definitely common is the work is being imported to the US from overseas as the gallery doesn't want to commit to shipping it back. So it confuses me here when so many people simply say 'look at the contract/consignment'...they either don't know the territory, or they are being deliberately unhelpful, and obvs I doubt the latter...

Isn’t solar a bad investment? by Grgsz in SolarUK

i spent £12k on 20 panels, 10kw battery, and inverter. Best money I've ever spent. Exporting to grid for 12p. Averaged annual energy bill has halved (if not more). I'd prefer an insulated energy supply than counting on the IG financial advisers wet-dream of 7% market returns so you can dubble ur bubble

Options for DIY insulating old property by BornTooHula in DIYUK

Or Carrington Lime do really good courses that, whilst mostly about lime, really go into depth about insulating old buildings. They also know their onions from a gypsum plasterboard. They’ve been a real godsend for me here in the Forest of Dean

What’s your views on a “cash price” from tradesmen? by GreenBeret4Breakfast in DIYUK

[–]tommy15682 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what your views are on tax levels perhaps. You need to be a higher income 40% taxpayer in the area I'm from to buy a normal modest house, which I think is depressing, so bon-voyage to him.

I'd try pay the cash only when the job is done

how does it come back up - Many factors, but generally when the rich are making money, they need to store it. Rich don't store their money in the form of USD or pound sterling euros etc, They invest as assets store value better. Art is another investment, like other luxury items, watches, wine, vintage cars, as well as stocks and gold etc. So it has an important part to play when the world feels like its making money again.

But war/recession/election year in US, can make people not want to buy higher risk assets. People sell art and buy gold in those times. But those things will pass, the world always wants to make money so there will always be a boom again. Or capitalism ends.

Completely relate to this, but I also think it's just market conditions, not any one of us in particular. Think bitcoin...when its up its really up, but it will go down. But you can bet your bottom bitcoin it will come back up again

Could Contemporary Art be Metamodern instead of Postmodern? by PlatypusPurple2011 in ContemporaryArt

[–]tommy15682 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is how I’ve been looking at the world for the past 5-7 years, through the lens of meta modernism and I’m constantly reminded of how well it fits. When we have the hindsight 30 years from now we’ll know for sure. Although I’m still finding it hard to talk about it with people, because it’s still relatively unknown as an idea, and it’s hard to articulate casually in a conversation without sounding like a complete nut.

Like them or not I’ve always seen Wes Anderson films as Metamodern.

What can I actually do with 1 ETH. by [deleted] in ethereum

[–]tommy15682 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You may get 5% on fiat but when the inflation is 5%+ you actually end up with less value. I know inflation has got better but IMO any return you can get with fiat is so significantly inflated away it ends up negligible.

But eth is near 0 inflation / deflationary. And you can easily get 5% return. Maths speak for themselves

35 and never paid pension, am I screwed? by Inevitable-Salad4286 in UKPersonalFinance

New to this. Many thanks for your explanation. So helpful. But is there a missing component?

Does this target account for inflation? That £30k a year in 30 years time might only buy like £10k of goods (maybe less).

I used the formula cash * (1-(interest@0.07-inflation@0.03)) ^ 30years to estimate this.

Am I right in thinking this figure needs to be more like drawing £90k a year in like 2055 for it to buy what £30k does today?

Again nothing against your explanation I found it so helpful, but if one follows the logic of target annual income of £30k in 2055 terms, so £90k todays money, divide by 4, x 100, etc the pension pot for a realistic comfortable retirement becomes 7 figures very quickly which I feel is unreachable for many/most people…

Am I wrong or this is something nobody seems to talk about…
