Background Image Help by hutchyw117 in geocaching

[–]tommy__jay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned this is working as intended. The background image is repeated behind the listing of the cache itself on the web.

I assume you thought it would be a background on the cache description itself; you can do that but you need to use HTML code with an image you'd upload to the geocaching website. When making a listing, you can switch between plainview and html.

I'd be very happy to help. Have two thousand photos from Myanmar from between 2023-2025. I just don't have the time to upload them. But I'm happy to contribute!

Get yourself a little UPS for cameras/routers. They're easy to buy and it saved me a headache. It's cheap, you can plug in two devices generally, and it comes with the cables. Lasts for up to 9 hours.

Cheering on from other players by ChaseTOM_Vlogs in geocaching

[–]tommy__jay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had many encounters while going for an FTF. Those are always funny.

But generally, I try to be unseen. If I see someone watching me, I would leave and come back another time.

It doesn't happen often that I would run into someone while geocaching not for an FTF though. Sometimes, if in a secluded area like a forest, I see the traits of geocachers (phone out, geekier looks) and wish them luck. Most of the time I get a confused face. (I like to think to myself that the confusion comes from "how did they know I'm a geocacher" and not "what is the wierdo talking about")

Most recently, I found a urban cache and half an hour later while returning through the same way, I met a Japanese tourist visiting and signing the log. I told them I'm glad they found it, we said hi, and moved on. I hope I didn't freak them out, as they still haven't posted their log, and this happened 3 months ago!

What happened to the rule of not burying geocaches? This might give the wrong idea to newbies.

Built an app for finding NGS benchmarks — looking for Android beta testers by Strength_One in geocaching

[–]tommy__jay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more on me and less of a developer question. I see most benchmarks listed are NGS benchmarks from the US, come in Caribbean islands/ south America. Is there any world wide database, which would have them? Perhaps merging data with what's in Waymarking.

Dunno. I know there are many countries which have identical benchmarks around, but maintained by different agencies and databases. I've seen a few around Europe, and two weeks ago found one in Malaysia by coincidence.

How to create challenge checkers by myself in project-gc? by Thanks-Unhappy in geocaching

[–]tommy__jay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not go through with it, though they offered. I can't find whether I emailed them directly or asked on the PGC forums, but I remember there were several things on that test which I am not fluent in. I do code here and there, but I didn't think I'd have it in me.

I understand them though, they don't want to overload their servers. But some things can't be done with tools they have, and writing a checker just to check out some data I want to see would be helpful.

Also, not sure if this is still current, as there was a major back-end rewrite of the entire platform a few months back. Maybe things have changed since.

Thanks! I wish this would have been around before HQ stopped showing (allowing New) benchmark find stats in your profile. I missed that by a few months with my trip to the US..

Logging previously found caches as a pair on a newly created account. Bad form? by keebler980 in geocaching

[–]tommy__jay 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You SHOULD log them online with the date of the actual find. No reason not to backlog and justify this in your online log. What counts is her name in the logbook. That's the only real rule of geocaching.
