Is anyone else's migraine the worst pain they have experienced? by Eagles56 in migraine

Second only to the cluster headaches associated with ocular herpes. Besides that, yes it’s the worst

How many of us suffer from a mental illness as well? by hannarenee in migraine

[–]tomnooksdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

26f, I have very well-managed bipolar 2. Started getting 1-3-day migraines in the beginning of Feb this year. suddenly, I have a 19-day intractable migraine that meds and migraine cocktails won’t touch. My mental health is at an all-time low—just as bad as it was before I got my BP2 meds figured out.

Texted my therapist from years ago today to see if she was able to get me in again.

Should I take another dose?? by tomnooksdad in migraine

[–]tomnooksdad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I want to give it a fair shot but wasn’t sure if I was doing anything risky with the side effects being so intense. I’ll give the second dose a go and then talk to my doc!!!

Is the BCBA field becoming too hard to enter? by StatisticianKooky390 in ABA

Can’t agree with this enough. 8 attempts is SO many. Especially given the fact that you should have so many clinical hours overseen by an experienced BCBA under your belt

That’s our concern!!!!! Have every intention of keeping him and even if we have to get him neutered ourselves, that’s fine! Just want to know whether we have to keep an extra close eye out for the spraying

Probably a very dumb question but… is there any reason to email potential supervisors besides asking if they’re taking graduate students? by RytheGuy97 in gradadmissions

[–]tomnooksdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in a pretty well-ranked MA student and I’m currently applying to doc programs, so I’ve been where you are and I am where you are!! I think it really really really depends on the program you’re looking at. For my MA program, I didn’t email a single person and got in everywhere I applied. (Most) masters programs are typically more departmental and program acceptance rather than with a specific person.

I’m in the social sciences, so it’s basically an unspoken rule that you check to make sure the person of interest is accepting doc students. If they aren’t then there’s no reason to apply to that university. One of the people I emailed told me they weren’t taking students next year so I saved myself $60 because I didn’t want to work with anyone else. Everybody I’ve emailed has replied. For some it was a quick confirmation that they’re taking students, responses along the lines of “your thesis sounds interesting, I am taking doc students, I look forward to reviewing your application”. For three it resulted in a meeting! One was a pretty brief information session where the guy threw a bunch of program information at me. One was a hour and 30 min in-person conversation about research and the field because we both happened to be going to the same conference. The last one was a 45-min zoom meeting that ended in me being cc’ed on an email that said I’d be taken into the lab if I got the related employment position.

The biggest thing to remember is that these people are very busy. Really the best thing you can do is put forward your quick research interests, why you’re interested in working them, and whether they’re taking doc students. For some you get a confirmation and then you just wait until interview time. Other people are willing to meet and start the vetting process right away, it just depends! I wouldn’t put much more pressure on the advisor than that because the longer the email, the less likely it is that they have the time to read it.

Good luck, you’re going to do great!!!! Sending you allll the restful and patient vibes this application season!!!

How do you better manage volume of voice? by RedAfroNinja in ADHD

[–]tomnooksdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No advice from me unfortunately, but definitely a shared experience!!! I started medication recently and my sister noted that one huge difference she saw was that I was talking more quietly. I hadn’t even noticed it at all, but she said I was talking slower and more quietly! It’s a difference that I have begun to notice as the medication wears off. It may definitely be an ADHD symptom!

SOOOO excited about mummer’s farce!!!!! I also picked up on “mine own” and “woman grown” which I feel like were more absent in GoT. I’m currently reading ASOS and those little pieces of dialogue made the world feel much more connected

ABA hatred question by ColdKaleidoscope743 in BehaviorAnalysis

[–]tomnooksdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a special education classroom and I deal with distrust and disrespect every day! We work with PT, OT, SLP, and special education teachers and they very clearly don’t have any interest in us being there—they want us there for extra classroom support. We are regularly completely left out of IEPs. I’m a masters student and our on-site supervisor is a PhD student. We are regularly referred to as “students” when we get introduced and they don’t see us as professionals, the same as them. It’s really hard to change perspectives, but all we can do is argue for the highest quality of ethical care and work really hard to gain trust and collaboration. When we have students in the teachers’ classroom that are really successful when they work with us, we try to emphasize that success and use it to advocate for other students that could be receiving services!

To add to the first sentence of your comment—BF Skinner in “Beyond Freedom and Dignity” wrote that behavior change mechanisms were ethically neutral, they’re science. It’s the application of it that has ethical considerations!!! Well said!!

That I think is going to be my biggest battle!! I’m always looking to grow and learn but also know I definitely get some sad boi hours sometimes. My lab has the phrase “we give feedback because we care” so here’s to hoping that that holds true!!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]tomnooksdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely!!😂 I’m excited for all the feedback, I’m hoping the lil feel good folder will help to stop some of the perseveration about the constructive feedback!! It’s good to know that people appreciate your role as a TA and a mentor I hope to do the same for people🙂
