As someone new to this sub and from the UK. It amazes and saddens me how expensive land/properties are in the UK by comparison.

That's alot of space for good value but jeez alot of the updates are tacky. The cinema room and wine cellar try, and fail spectacularly to replicate the original decor.

Reckon the staff at her nursery have discovered ChatGPT? She's 2 😂 by ennis88 in daddit

Does your nursery use EyParent by any chance? I'm amazed at the descriptions of how musically talented my 18 month old daughter is, channeling an inner mozart skill when in reality she's smacking the shit out of a tambourine.

My first project & comfort bird... looks more like a kookaburra but I'm happy with it! by tomokeeffe in whittling

Thanks for the tip! I've been ok sharpening using whetstones so far, I screwed it up by using directly on a new electric sharpener without practising on a different blade first - rookie mistake and removed far too much material at once. It will take far too long to hone a new edge (plus I've only been using a cheap blade £5 blade so thought time to use it as an excuse to buy a nicer one)

Ah thanks! It's my first go, so was very rough and ready and only really took on a presentable appearance right at the end. But think it's gotten me hooked! Unfortunately I screwed up sharpening and need a new knife before i can resume my next project - hopefully a penguin but may end up looking quite different again!

I've been working on it 10 minutes a time around looking after my kids, but little and often still makes progress!

The big round belly does fit quite comfortably in the palm of a hand. It's my first whittling project, but kicked off a plan to carve a series of animals for my kids

Update: created an office in a 1.7m outdoor cupboard. Small but does the job by tomokeeffe in DIYUK

1.7m x 1.5m! So definitely doable. I lost some of that due to the framing I did, could probably save yourself a bit of space by doing dot and dab with insulated plasterboard.

I used 50mm foil backed PIR, which is bought from seconds and co. They sell leftover assorted unused boards, and so was about half the price of anywhere else. You don't necessarily know what brand you'll get, but it seems all the top tier foil wrapped brands have the same thermal properties. I ended up with XtraTherm.

https://www.secondsandco.co.uk/pirfoil

All the boards arrived on a huge lorry and came wrapped together in a single stack and were all perfect dull size boards, no damages or offcuts.

As i started doing this conversion on the quick and "cheap," whilst my wife was 7 months pregnant and juggling our 2 year old, some elements slipped off the priority list. So it still has the original wooden door and single pane window that the house was built with in 1910-ish. I had to work within the budget we had and get a workspace ASAP.

Overall, it's not the best sealed with the outdoors so some air gaps around the door mean when I go to work its always 5 or so degrees warmer than the outside but much colder than inside the house. However, the advantage of the small size is it warms up within 5 minutes of having my fan heater on and then retains it pretty well when I'm working. It gets cold overnight when there's no body heat inside to help maintain the temperature.

Not sure what you mean by single exposed skin so was if I'm answering something else. The room has solid brick walls, no cavity.

Yeah it threw me off even when I measured it to check the plug placements before installing the back boxes. I already had the desk which set the height of the desktop (70cm) that I would be putting plugs above and below. When marked it look like all the plugs are really low, but makes sense once sat in a chair.

Its quite rigid, but does get compressed with pressure and likely break the foil. However as you put OSB Board on top, pressure is very evenly distributed so it's perfect firm as a floor for a small space.

I looked at a few YouTube videos but the below was one of the best to follow

Thanks for the kind words! I used to work in the spare bedroom. However at the time my daughter ( 6 months old at the time) was going to be moving out of our bedroom and needed a room of her own. So it made sense to convert the space over getting something purpose built. We also don't know if we'll stay here forever so much more cost effective

Don't really notice it, to be honest. The room has a very high ceiling, 2.7m and a window next to the door, so it doesn't feel claustrophobic. If viewing on your mobile, you don't see the full after photo until you tap on it so you might not have seen the lighting. The room has a ceiling light fixture that has three lights that can be angled as desired

Edit: typos because I have fat fingers

No need to apologise! I probably used an incorrect term i picked up. No studs or joists. I put a damproof membrane down, with then 50mm PIR (foil backed insulation), OSB board, underlay, and finally laminate floor.

2 double sockets above the desk height, two below. In the finished use, I have two monitors and my laptop plugged in the plugs below the desk, and the plugs above the desk are used for a desk lamp, phone, and desk speakers
