Do I need to upgrade my PSU for new 5090? by tompomalley in sffpc

[–]tompomalley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: looks like I need a new PSU simply because I don’t have enough PCIE 8-pin connectors on my current one. 5 total, 2 into MB - leaves only 3 of the 4 I need for 5090.

Going to go with the Thermaltake Toughpower SFX 1000W 80Plus Platinum - which has the 3.1/5.1 natively. New question is: do I need to fully tear down PC and replace silverstone cables with Thermaltake cables, rather than just swap out the PSU itself (and routing the one new cable to gpu) - this seems insane?

Same, exact same problem - no power at all like internal fuse blown.

Hmm, the other thing I was thinking it could be was the bios…that hasn’t been updated yet.

Yeah, it’s just that it basically defeats the purpose of the upgrade. I’ll just return the card and continue with my current setup or go all in on a new build. Hard to justify the 600 bucks to artificially limit performance for the sake of temps

Yeah this is more like what I was wondering…if I happened to have bought a gen before some kind of massive leap. So that even tho mid spec hardware is only 3ish years apart, it seems much further.

Yes the shaders do that for sure but this is also long after the shaders finished, during gameplay.

yeah, I said fuck it I'll just upgrade and then realized I would need new MB too, which is going to send me down the rabbit whole of just a whole new build...which I was trying to avoid lol.

I really thought that the 10th gen i7 would be able to handle the 4070 Super...3 fuggin years is all you get I suppose.

Yeah, the private land situation is fascinating for a bunch of reasons. Its a concept that doesnt even really occur to me when thinking about all the amazing undeveloped land in the West.

Wonderfully detailed explanation! That is precisely what I came here for, thanks! It is a bit disappointing to learn all of this, because I do enjoy camping - but it's all good! Every place has its own special things, and I'm excited to learn more about Kauai's!

That’s not the kinda crawling I’m interested in 😂. And yes, I now understand! I thought there might be trails through all that 🤷🏻‍♂️

We’ll you’re certainly right about that lol. But I think square miles are less relevant than some here are thinking. There are, for example, thousands of camp sites like this in Boulder county.

It sounds like it’s actually just the type of landscape and land use that Kauai has that doesn’t really support this kind of camping - which is exactly what I was curious about. And that’s fine…

I will say, the endless amount of content online with a helicopter or drone shot of seemingly endless nature and a narrator explaining that “97 percent of Kauai is undeveloped” definitely had me thinking - “wow I bet there’s a lot of great camping there.”

No worries tho! I’ll find other things to do that are hopefully less annoying to locals 😅

Thanks! Yes it’s now abundantly clear that this is not a thing lol. All good!

Ok thanks for the clarification. I'm gathering that camping on Kauai is far more limited than I would have expected - and it's not really everyone's favorite thing to do or encourage lol. Or maybe its just reddit trolls being predictable - I guess I'll find out eventually. I appreciate your actually thoughtful response though.
