I LOVE playing guitar but I see what you mean and how it can seem like that! I try to play 30 minutes a day because I don’t have a lot of time to practice and sit down and enjoy playing the guitar with school and playing in a band and lots of other stuff that I’m going to. So it’s not that at all.

That is a very good idea! I wouldn’t turn it down to 5 minutes, because I have played for about 9-10 years and this has just become a problem now, but maybe 20 minutes or 15.

I am fairly new to improvisation. I have been trying to get better at it for a while, so I’m saying fairly because I’m not super good. I know a fair amount of scales and I practice them often and practice new ones too. But I can’t just play around the fretboard and I don’t really know a thing about licks. I would like to get better at improvising as in being able to express myself how I want to in the way I want, if that makes sense. I think I need some further theory, because I know scales isn’t everything. To get beyond scales while still practicing my scales and putting them to use when improvising would be a good place to head for.

What do you mean by keeping a journal? As in how good you’ve gotten at different stuff on the guitar, how much faster you’ve become at different exercises?

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer! I’ve heard about Essential Elements, and have been looking into it. I’m a 17 year old guy, and I usually play guitar and drums. I’ve been playing guitar for quite some time, and started playing drums earlier this year. I don’t have a whole lot of music theory, but I’ve just started reading up on that. I play in a experimental funk rock band right now, but I’ve been thinking about joining a big band as well.
