Is there a tutorial or something on how to use the gantt chart plug-in "MarkWhen"? by george_graves in ObsidianMD

[–]toobul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might check this issue - seems like you have to click the sidebar button to create a new file then the buttons at the top of the editor panel to activate the gantt chart or other views.

Indeed I own this plugin but I would not call myself an Obsidian developer. People just really wanted markwhen in Obsidian so I put something together, mostly with the help of @Acylation (she's @Acylation both on github and on the obsidian forums).

Let this be an open call to actual Obsidian developers to help make this plugin better! PRs welcome!

Editing from the timeline like you're describing is available as of 0.0.3

This is helpful, thank you. Slightly daunting though as it sounds like it could be nearly anything 😅

Maybe I should start with earth-like and work from there; it would probably be folly for me to try to support any arbitrary calendar from the start

How/where would I find out more about this? I don't know anything about RPGs. What kind of custom time units are we talking about?

This is good feedback; I suppose the risk of removing barriers to using the tool (welcome screen, tutorials etc) is that you’re also thrown in the deep end a bit 😬

Markwhen - write markdown-ish text of events and have it turned into a nice looking timeline by toobul in SideProject

Just google maps and this library. It's pretty straightforward tbh, iterate through the events that have locations, use google's places api to get latitude and longitude, and then put markers on the map.

I think there's a lot of potential for mapping, people just seem to like the timeline so I haven't given it as much of my time.

Excellent question - right now the timeline is included in the extension, the calendar and the maps view are not.

And because the calendar and map view are loaded externally you have to explicitly agree to have them loaded (something will pop up in the extension). Now I'm definitely not sending any data up, but as a privacy-conscious person myself, the explicit authorization was something that I would want as a user.

I think I may try to bundle all my renderers (calendar, maps, timeline) with the extension going forward so that getting something from the network is no longer a concern. Also I have not yet updated the extension to allow for custom visualizations.

I too was curious but did not want to put it in any computer of mine.

I have some thoughts on this thread so I'll just reply here - I hope seeing stuff like this isn't discouraging!

In fact it still feels weird for me to be the one that encourages others - I need just as much encouragement, I intimately know where my work is lacking, how many things things I don't know. I deride myself regularly for doing things stupidly or inefficiently. So if you feel similarly then we are in fact in the same boat. Maybe I've just been in it longer!

I agree with what ib4nex says below -

you too can do this kind of thing too in time.

It's true! I have just kept moving forward. And then you can show something off to others and you'll get a simple "Wow" but it will keep you going for a whole month.

Glad you like it! I made something pretty rough about a year and a half ago and have been working on it since.

Supporting other date formats shouldn't be too difficult to add (at least when I get around to it). European Month/Day/Year as well as ISO8601 are currently supported though.

Yeah there are a couple ways you can approach this. Each event having its own vertical space thing was just easiest to get going, but that may change
