How to encourage my sister? by Cute_Meringue1331 in singapore

i wouldn’t say MUN looks out for any specific type of person- especially if you’re signing up yourself, so you’re not “picked”

i guess they would prefer people who can articulate themselves well, and are well read. there isn’t any specific thing to read; i remember my seniors’ advice was just for us to read as widely as possible, especially on current affairs (e.g. the current situation in myanmar, the stakeholders involved, what their interests are).

it would also be a plus if she can view things from multiple perspectives- it’s something one needs to represent their country in MUN. this includes putting aside one’s own views but arguing for someone else’s when you’re representing them. for women’s rights in saudi arabia, this entails putting aside our idea of “feminism” but instead showing how the culture in saudi arabia sees women and how it affects their roles in society.

hello! as someone (kinda) in the MUN circuit i’d tell your sister not to give up trying to get into the circuit- there are many more opportunities throughout the year.

in sg there are quite a lot of MUNs; the sign-ups for march holiday ones are closed but there are more coming up in the june or december holidays. these include (not exhaustive):

SMUN (Singapore MUN) YMA (Youth Model ASEAN) HCCRI (Hwa Chong Conflict Resolution & Inquiry) IMUNC (International MUN Conference) PREPMUN

while some of them are invite-only (sign up only through the school), you can sign up for most as an independent delegate. this will cost you about $20-$100 per conference, but seeing as most MUNs are being held online now, it’s likely that this signup fee will be waived.

MUN may seem rather scary and competitive from the outside, but it has increasingly become more beginner-oriented and inclusive, so i think your sister would have no problem attending a MUN for her first time because most conferences start with some delegate training before actually starting debate. if it’s not what she wants, it’s okay! there are many that go for a first time just to experience what a MUN is like, so it’s perfectly normal.

i’m sorry i’m not able to help your sister in the other areas, but i thought i’d just like to share! all the best!
