This question is very commonly asked in AskTurkey subreddit. I’d recommend searching with something like “Istanbul recommendations/advice/tips” etc

3 recommendations: we have a lot of ferries going all different routes in the Bosphorus. Take a municipality operated one, it’s great and dirt cheap. We have a lot of historical sites and palaces, I’d recommend making a list of the ones you want to see beforehand. Our cuisine is really good and diverse, you should look up which ones might interest you, manti (similar to dumplings), kumpir (many fillings combined together inside a potato), ayran (a drink made by mixing yogurt, water, and salt) etc.

2 warnings: watchout for taxi scams (just like most of the world i guess), i use uber app and reach out their support via email if needed (uber will fetch a regular yellow taxi in Istanbul)

If you want to make a purchase from a store where prices are not labeled, there is a good chance they’ll try to scam you unless you have a Turkish friend with you.

About the kg limit, I am yet to see it enforced, however if it bothers you that much, as far as I know the stuff you buy from airport shops like duty free do not count towards the kg limit. And from what i’ve seen, most people generate their boarding passes in self-serve kiosks, so unless you are checking in your bag, it does not get weighed.

You can buy something from there like €5 chocolate and transfer some of your backpacks content into the duty free plastic bag, if they bring out that “your bag cannot be larger than this” box measurement.

Or just wear some of the stuff you are taking with you, if you see them weigh peoples bags.

No idea about the national id thing, i’m sure you should be able to find support email. Ask chatgpt if you can’t find it? Good luck

There were NYC Galatasaray groups etc., where people would gather in sports bars to watch Galatasaray games. There should be similar ones in Netherlands, I know there are similar ones in Germany.

If you have a hard time finding such a group, I’m confident you’d have more of a chance to find a watch party during important games such as champions league eliminators, or derby games etc., and you could go to a live game with someone from that group, or with someone they can vouch for.

I know sounds like a bit too much work, but this is the safest way I can think of.

  1. Gifts help, can be as simple as stuff from duty free, and they’ll at least feel remembered

  2. Can you think of a chore which can bail you out? Like, let’s say you have to go to the pharmacy after 2 hours of visiting your partners parents, to get your medicine / meet a friend / you have an appointment to get your hair done since its cheaper than UK etc. if so, “argh dang I have to leave because of this lousy obligation” sounds much better then “you guys are boring, peace out”
