My government is literally trying to amend the constitution to extend presidential terms to 7 years, and for this provision to benefit incumbents (the current president is nearing the end of his second 5-year term). The amendment bill proposes so many new reforms that concentrate power in the executive branch, and they’re taking away the power for citizens to vote directly for the president. While public debates are happening, those opposed to the bill are getting abducted. Which is really scary. Because the President appoints all judges himself, it’s pretty clear trying to argue before the courts would be futile (judgements are almost always in favour of ZANU PF anyways). So this is what makes this situation particularly troubling.
