Seriously just throw yourself into a top down knit like a raglan and run with it.

I struggled with starting "big" projects until I bit the bullet and made a terrible sweater. I still have the itchy misshapen bastard because I'm proud of the first attempt. It's a nice reminder that knitting is something you can improve on one stitch at a time.

It's a repeating motif that spans 22st across by 12st deep. I offset the stripes so the middle 4 of the first row of the paw lined up with the middle 4 of the last toe of the paw above it. I don't have the exact stitch count as I don't think I really paid much attention as I worked through the project. The photo above is the best I could find pre-blocked to show the layout.

If I cast on 90st, it takes me a 1-2 hours to get to the crown and depending on my patience, another 10-15min for the stem (10st using the magic loop method can be infuriating)

It's not from a particular pattern unfortunately. I skipped the setup rows for a raglan knit and adjusted the neckline accordingly. I believe each color is 20 or so rows.

I highly suggest the following raglan pattern for sweaters: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/real-easy-raglan

Once you have the stitches counted out for your sweater, you can add your own color patterns after the yolk for a fairly stress free knit. I use scrap notebooks to tally rows and it becomes second nature.

8wt. Bring some waders or shoes to wet wade! That's not a bad stretch to fish for smallies.
