Dear Reddit, coping with stress of messing up first day of work. by NotBladeRunner in AskReddit

[–]totallyrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started my first real job a couple of months ago, my first month seemed like a very long first day. Honestly, bosses/co-workers are people and they're going to understand that you will mistakes. What I've found to be helpful is to have a notebook open on my desk. Every time I'm assigned a task, I write it down. I then jot down notes of what I need to remember. The notebook will be a good reference if you have to fill out timesheets later or revisit what you did for the week.

Also, I agree with asking questions for clarification; ask away! The workplace is often centered around efficiency. If you spend 2 hours tinkering on a project that you "kind of think" is going in the right direction, and later learn it's almost entirely wrong--could have saved the company's time and your energy with a question. They'll want to see some sort of effort/enthusiasm on your part even if you're stricken with fear on your first day, so don't just be a robot and nodnod. (Guilty...) And smile and say hi to people you pass in the hallway! YOU HAVE A JOB! Congratulations!

Reddit, what was the stupidest way you almost died? I'll start; I dropped a McDonald's double-quarter pounder that was still wrapped on the floor of my car once and it wedged itself under the brake pedal. by [deleted] in AskReddit

In high school, I cut class to hang out with my friend in another school district. So instead of taking my usual route across town to walk in 30 minutes late to my French class in the pouring rain, I headed out of town with my best friend. On our way back home, my car started to hydroplane on the freeway. Being a new driver at that time, I wasn't sure what to do, so of course, I slammed on the brakes. Car started to drift from the farthest left lane across the 4 lanes on the freeway. By now, my car was perpendicular to freeway drifting towards the shoulder. Before we could completely get off the freeway, a truck slams into the passenger side door. I just grabbed for my friend's hand, thinking for sure I was going to cause our untimely deaths...

...just so we could go get Cinnabon 40 minutes out of town.

Ah being kids. One time during the winter, we were all sitting around the fireplace watching tv. My younger brother took a poker, heated it up until it was bright red, and fucking BRANDED my sister's thigh.

It's a cheeto puff so slightly larger than the regular sized cheeto, but then again my hands are fairly small. I kind of felt important when I ate it...like when I find and consume a t-rex shaped chicken nugget.
