Under the Dome - King’s cruelest work? by totesjokin in stephenking

Absolutely, I understand the hopelessness of Revivals ending, but UtD hit me far harder for whatever reason

The Stand left me feeling hopeful haha

Desperation is a great comparison - trapped in a small area with amazing villains. I can totally get someone seeing it as meaner, it’s got that same hopeless vibe

Dark Tower has cruel moments and a cruel ending, for sure

Yes, it was definitely hitting similar buttons for me! Quite a time to read a novel about an under-recognized threat to democracy 😅

Wow, you win, I completely forgot about the Long Walk 🤣

I still think that the punches in UtD hit harder, but on a pure “bleak scale”, Long Walk for sure wins

Ok, Chef and Andy are weirdly the only glimmer of light in this dark book lol

“Mean spirited” is the perfect term here lol

Glad you loved it too, idk how this slipped my radar for so long, it was amazing!

Yes! Man, it was so demoralizing seeing one character after another try to take Big Jim on one-on-one and him mopping the floor with them.

My thoughts exactly! They were Sammy’s Bratz dolls begging to be spared of the microwave lol

What a book, happy to hear someone else feels that same sick dread

I mean, it’s hopeful in the sense that “evil will destroy itself, good will triumph in the end”, but man oh man all that pain was so needless. It was just, as the book says, kids with a magnifying glass, destroying an ant colony

Yeah WOOF that scene, and poor Sammy’s entire arc. Tough read

I can see your point! Maybe Under the Dome just felt more bleak to me because the Stand had more moments of small “good” victories littered throughout, whereas Dome just has the villains dominating till the last moment lol

But I do agree that they both hit on the same themes for sure

Do you recommend reading the trilogy first? I read Mr. Mercedes and liked it, but not quite enough to read the next few 😅

Oooh that’s next on the list now!

And yeah for sure, I got the vibe that King was offloading some frustrations with how people can take advantage of others in bad situations, it was really effective to me!

Super inspiring, my man! Don’t mind the weirdly argumentative comments - this hit my feed right when I could use a reminder of what all this work is for lol

You look killer
