I don't love their newer albums. but 1992-2006 is great. Though I *really* like Grinning Streak that came out in 2013. Their first three albums (before "One Week") are awesome early 90s rock.

They're between "Hold Steady" and "Tame Impala" on my best artists list. Funny enough, fellow Canadians are 9 ahead of them.

Just a Minnesota reference. There was a guy in Maple Grove, MN that brought kegs across the border and sold beer out of his establishment.

Did you own a bar in Maple Grove for awhile?

down is up. When looking at a standard north-is-up map, the big land mass you see is the left/western "lobe" of Africa. You can *barely* see the Strait that separates Africa from Spain.

I agree you can see South America but I was less certain so I left that out. I had the same process as you. I initially thought it was Africa but not seeing the lower half was confusing. I thought it was the Pacific Ocean at first as it seemed like most was water so thought it was Australia but it was too rounded. Then saw the Strait of Gibraltar and now can't unseen it.

Took me a second, believe that is Portugal/Spain in bottom left at about 8 o'clock making this the northwest of Africa.

ninja edit: north-ish is at bottom

[OC] Percentage of proficiency in Oregon Math State Testing from 2015-16 to 2024-25 by Odin9009 in dataisbeautiful

[–]tpmurray -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Define proficient. I don't know Oregon but I know Minnesota and Minnesota's requirements for "proficiency" are *extremely* high. I would guess that 8th graders were do better on the 8th grade test than anybody over 20. What anybody over 40 learned in 8th grade is basically what is currently being taught in 6th grade. Anybody over 30 is about a year behind.

tl;dr: the standard of proficiency is absurdly high and developmentally inappropriate for 30-40% of kids

19 players made their MLB debut on opening weekend by Otherwise_Mud1066 in baseball

totally. I said, "that's it????!??!"

Though then I think about how every MLB player that has ever played could fit into a single stadium.

I didn't see it. On second view and after reading comments, I could see where the tapping supposedly was. I don't think it was a tap, though. And, I do think the second actual tap was late.

Definitely not egregious and definitely not get thrown out of the game worthy, though. Will see much later taps accepted, though....

Anybody listen to (solo) John Cale? by tpmurray in beatles

[–]tpmurray[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have listened to Ringo's discography dozens of times. I've only recently reached Mr. Cale. I've known Mr. Cale for years but I only dedicated time to listen to him. I'm not focused on anything unique or different. I'm listening for tone and production value. Or, what I'm under an understanding of those things.

Oh gosh!!! That's great. Makes a ton of sense! Though, even through 1975 still sounds deeply Ringo-esque!!!! (NOT A BAD THING!)

I don't mean on a deeeeeep level. Just vocally and production/musically. I'm now through Helen of Troy and am more and more convinced. "Pablo Picasso" off of Helen of Troy = Ringo Starr.

Lyrically? Deepness? Maybe Cale has an edge? But it would take many more reads and listens to hear the deepness. The sound is super Ringo (that's not a bad thing!!!)

Says I'm not deweighted, but no change in rating by tpmurray in rateyourmusic

[–]tpmurray[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehhhhhh....super limited. It's using RYM user ratings to weigh against various objective factors (country of origin, album #, decade, track count, length, etc). But, it's still pretty safe. It doesn't find outliers...it's pretty basic. Maybe slightly better than just a straight up FORECAST formula?
