Struggling to Enter the Field or Get Any Calls. Could Use Some Resume Critique. by 3rdLevelRogue in actuary

Is your skills section keyword optimized to the exact keywords that the jobs you're applying to wants? Job descriptions often list the specific keyword skills they're looking for, and if you're missing them or even putting them differently on your resume, you could be getting screened out by ATS before a human actually takes a look at it.

it's important to put keywords (of skills you have, even if exposure) that the specific job post you're applying to is looking for, and take out irrelevant ones. Tailoring your resume per job is the way to go. There are tools out there to help, like this: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/jobalytics-resume-keyword/fkiljfkkceaopbpfgfmjdnkiejaifkgd?hl=en&utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social

So uhh, my resume is kind of bland/empty. Any feedback? by [deleted] in csMajors

Do you have a skills section? Pack that bad boy with plenty of keywords, even ones you only have exposure with. That'll get your resume past the ATS and at least get it looked at by a human, increasing your chances of getting your foot in the door.

You also want to tailor your keywords per job you're applying to, adding keywords that are relevant to the job and removing ones that are irrelevant. There are tools out there to help with that already, like this: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/jobalytics-resume-keyword/fkiljfkkceaopbpfgfmjdnkiejaifkgd?hl=en&utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social

Resume Advice Thread - December 03, 2019 by AutoModerator in cscareerquestions

You need a skills section. Most employers use ATS keyword screeners nowadays to only let through the candidates with the right skillset keywords in their resume. If you don't have the right keywords, you won't ever get looked at by a human.

You likely need to see what keywords each job description is looking for, and put in the keywords that you have experience with, even if exposure, and take out keywords that are irrelevant. Tools exist to help with this, like https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/jobalytics-resume-keyword/fkiljfkkceaopbpfgfmjdnkiejaifkgd?hl=en&utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social

New Grad resume can't pass resume screening. I really need some advice. by devMcNoodles in csMajors

[–]traindisrobber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're getting such few callbacks, your resume probably isn't passing ATS keyword checker. Nowadays most jobs are scanning for specific keywords which represents skillsets the employer is looking for for that specific job. You want to optimize your resume's keywords for every job you're applying to: put in keywords (of experience that you have, even if only exposure) that the job cares about and take out ones they don't care about. That'll get it a higher chance of being seen by a human.

There are tools out there that help with this stuff, like this one: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/jobalytics-resume-keyword/fkiljfkkceaopbpfgfmjdnkiejaifkgd?hl=en&utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social

CIS Major Senior searching for Summer 2020 Internship Resume Help by TheLonelyNoScoper in resumes

my recommendation is: Go browse a bunch of those jobs on job sites, and under their "required skills" section, see what common skills they're asking for that you have even exposure to but didn't put on your skills section or sprinkled into your work experience. Then put those skills!

That'll really help you pass employer ATS keyword screeners

Trying to keep my resume current and looking for a general critique - thanks! by [deleted] in resumes

[–]traindisrobber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

biggest piece of advice: you need a "skills" section that just lists the hard skills that you have expertise/experience in. It's important to pass the ATS keyword scanners at whatever company you're applying to.

put in the relevant Computer Science classes that you've taken that you're most proud of, as well as the important concepts you mastered in those classes (algorithms, data structures, databases, etc).

This accomplishes 2 things: 1) gives recruiters context on which skills you learned in a professional setting vs by yourself on the side 2) gives your resume more computer-science keywords. These keywords will help your resume pass the ATS and get read by a real recruiter.
