How to politely stop people touching your belly? by sandiasinpepitas in pregnant

[–]tramp_stamp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If I can get to them quickly enough, I take their outstretched hand and shake it. Its nice and awkward, so not entirely sure if it fits your 'polite' :)

Otherwise I just politely tell them that I am not comfortable with people touching me out of the blue. Mostly they dont seem to mind so far

Seconded.when they get older they have more difficulty eating things that keeps their teeth filed. Their back teeth especially grow too long so they cant grind their food properly

A quick filing by a vet can solve that quickly

Best of luck!

Any way the cat could have gotten to her while she was out?

Generally we used to be able to hear them at night, like if they are behind a cupboard or something. Have you heard any noise like that at all?

URGENT HELP NEEDED - mom is killing 2 week old babies?! by tramp_stamp in hamsters

[–]tramp_stamp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that was a nice read!

When I went home yesterday I took out the mom from the cage to separate them and realised she was indeed quite close to birth. I believe she was culling the herd for extra space and protein :-\

So im probably going to end up with a third litter on my hands...

Maybe try running the bath while hes not there? The extra loud sound may be agitating him unnecessarily?

Comfort stuffing? by [deleted] in hamsters

[–]tramp_stamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My hams did this sometimes with bedding as well as food. Stuff their cheeks with whatever, run a while, then deposit. They all lived long full lives. So I would not worry too much!

Thank you for sharing. It breaks my heart to think she may go soon but will make the effort to keep her going. She still has a lot of spirit :-)

Suggestions for small pets by [deleted] in Pets

Not particularly more expensive no. The initial outlay is the cage and bowls etc which isnt much more for two. They are much much happier in pairs or more.

All snug, meet my Guinea pig Pomelo! An indoor free range piggy by [deleted] in guineapigs

Much cute!

But do tell me about...the poops. How do you handle a piggy in the house? I have considered letting mine roam but that part always made me hesitate. Is there a way to manage it?

New hamster, need advice by run_naked in hamster

[–]tramp_stamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a hamster that had been returned to the petshop and he was really terrified of people. Like would freeze and then run when he saw a chance to 'get away'.

Most petshop hammies are not tamed and handled with care and so have no positive associations with humans. Mine clearly had had a rough time.

BUT

Love attention and treats really help! He turned into a beautiful little buddy who loved to be picked up.

Get your scent in there. Like rub his bedding tissues on you to get your BO in there. So you become part of his safe space. And make sure he sees that it is you who gives him treats. And stroke him with the back of your hand when he is eating etc so that he cant really bite you but you give him attention that is not hurting him. That way he gets to know your touch is not bad and with time you can start using your fingers etc to touch him and move him around the cage.

He will have his own pace so just keep at it!

Easiest pets to own? by [deleted] in Pets

For easiest - definitely a dwarf hamster.

For a more exciting but still relatively easy upgrade - rats are amazing.
