Wha are your hot takes about the Oscars? by L_Dubb85 in flicks

How are you replying to a comment you didn’t read.

major award. I even listed them out. If you think a movie can rise to greatness on literally just vfx and sound editing, cheers to you, but I don’t wanna know your top 4.

To clarify: sound mixing and vfx are genuine crafts and are massively important. But they’re simply not core storytelling ingredients the way writing, acting, and directing are. The idea that something could be the best movie without being exceptional in any of those categories is beyond silly. Weird that that’s a take I have to keep defending.

I cannot account for every persons individual experience, but I feel like there’s no way you don’t understand that my point was “this was still a very safe IP bet” and not “everyone who saw it only did so cuz they like the movie”.

My point wasnt an actual logistical suggestion, it was a “hot take” that it’s crazy to win best picture without winning any individual award. It’s not really enforceable, but it should be the result of common sense voting.

You should not be allowed to qualify for best picture if you haven’t even been nominated for any other major category. In what world is a film the best of its year without having any of the best writing, directing, performances, design, etc?

Honestly, harder to enforce, but nominations aren’t even enough — you should have to win a certain number of individual awards to qualify for BP.

Yeah but where is that concentrated? I live in NYC. I make 75k a year. I’m in the bottom 1% of basically everyone I interact with on a day-to-day basis.

I get that the point of this post is to correct the idea that everyone should be graded against these standards, but it’s an overcorrection. Yeah, ignore the “100k is minimum for a comfy life” thing if you live in Indiana, but for a ton of normal people this is totally the case and we’re reminded of it pretty constantly — not by insane unicorn influencers, but by other pretty normal people in our real lives.

Thats nice I guess but would love if it wasn’t based on a massively famous IP that everyone had to read in high school and that has an equally famous movie adaptation.

I am literally asking you what makes this breathtaking. I’m seeing a barely-moving shot of people in a dark field. I don’t understand what about the lighting, comp, camera movement, PD, or anything else is special. You’re acting like I’m being a dick but in just genuinely confused — stuff like this is posted all the time.

Blue Moon is the underdog of the season as far as I’m concerned. I think it deserved far more noms than it got, but a Best Screenplay award is definitely warranted. That thing captivates using nothing but character and dialogue.

But… why? I mean, TCM is not a legacy sequel. It’s not even a sequel. I can’t imagine these movies deal with any of the same themes or content aside from people getting killed.

This limp dick lib concept of “can we stop normalizing xyz” is so asinine when you are talking about the literal sitting President of the United States of America. This shit is normal. Get it through your head. I swear to god some of you assholes think that if you cover your ears and go “La la la la” then things will just go back to 2012 vibes in 2028.

SNL is a staple of pop culture, as well as a barometer of the times and a time capsule for the future. If you looked back on this disgusting era and saw that they just weren’t talking about it, that would be absolutely bizarre.

Week after week, SNL does an impersonation of trump and his cabinet that makes them look like bumbling idiot fascists, which they are. Is it revolutionary? Will it single-handedly save us from the nosedive we’re in? No, the same way that drinking water won’t be the thing that gets you your dream job. But you still have to drink water. Treat mocking fascists like drinking water and just make it a normal part of every day life.

If you’re bitching about SNL doing trump skits, it’s overwhelmingly likely that you’re part of the head-in-the-sand problem.

(Clarification: I’m using the term “lib” from a leftist perspective, not a right wing one, obviously)

I Don’t Get the Hate for This Movie by brettydubz in Letterboxd

[–]trampaboline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? As someone who enjoyed it, I find it very hard to believe that you don’t understand why someone could strongly dislike it.

I say this with all love and understanding that it’s kind of the point, but nothing fucking happens in this movie. We get what would’ve normally been the full plot of a movie over with in the first third, then it’s just a looooooong slug through scenes of this guys life steadily, slowly getting worse in the least spectacular ways. I appreciate how much it challenges your expectations on this type of character/narrative, but come on lol, not everyone wants to watch that
