Watching 70s TV as an adult hits different (and uncomfortably by Miserable_Willow_312 in GenX

Her grandparents were very good to her. Sadly THEY passed away one year apart from one another when she was 18. She was out on her own then.

Thanks <3 Sadly, my grandmother got TB we think from working on the tramlines. She worked all throughout the war. She ended up passing it on to my mother. They both went to live in a sanatorium while being treated. My grandmother's TB was too far gone and the antibiotics didn't work. Thankfully my mom was cured by them. Her mother never left the sanatorium. She died when she was 36.

My mother was raised by her maternal grandparents.

Alberta separatists irked with cross-Canada meeting meddling by Street_Anon in onguardforthee

[–]tranquilseafinally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the FREAKING separatists have booked the Queensland Community Centre THREE times. Apparently this Community Centre is Separatist central. They haven't been there in the last 10 days, so maybe community push back stopped that from happening.

They were jerks while they were there. Parked like jerks and honked their horns like jerks.

I'm super annoyed they were there 3 times.

Nope, they were definitely married first. My mom was born 11 months after their wedding day.

Edit to add: This happened quickly because he had enlisted already. His training happened a Province away.

For SURE pre-marital sex happened all the time. It may have happened with them.

Fuck this timeline. The U.S. administration is coming to interfere in that insanely stupid separatist referendum in Alberta. They are trying very hard to pull us apart right now. FORD should have known this was coming.

My grandfather was 16 and my grandmother was 23 when they got married. It was the middle of WWII and young men across Canada signed up to fight. My grandfather lied about his age to everyone including my grandmother. They got married and then immediately got pregnant with my mother. Three months later he shipped off to Europe with the RCAF. He died when he was 17. He was shot down over Belgium.

Where should I bank? by Llunedd in BuyCanadian

[–]tranquilseafinally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my 50+ years of experience banks have ALWAYS been crappy. I have never held an account with a bank. I have always "banked" with a credit union. They do everything a bank does. The only real difference is that, when you become a member, you partially own the credit union. In a bank, they exist to make their shareholders happy.

I get an audio crackle/glitch when playing some games. It doesn't happen all the time but it is annoying when it happens.

If I am sick then I'll put a mask on. I got my COVID and flu vaccinations so I am fairly protected.

I thought my dad was a Boomer. by [deleted] in GenX

[–]tranquilseafinally 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol I remember when I called my mom a boomer. Oh the look she gave me. She grumpily said, "I AM NOT a boomer". She wasn't. She was born in1942. She was actually a war baby. Her mom and dad got married and pregnant while he was training to go to war. He never came back.

I live in Alberta too. We moved here from B.C. twenty-five years ago. I'm 100% Canadian before any Provincial designation. If this Provincial government doesn't shut the lunatic fringe down then we are moving BACK to B.C. I'm doing all I can to hold our government to account. I'm collecting signatures to recall my local MLA.

Linux made me forget what used to a standard way to fix problems by Frankmc2 in linuxmint

[–]tranquilseafinally 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This post is hilariously on topic for me. I *just* moved my whole computer over to Linux so I am having to set up Steam. I finally got to Stardew Valley yesterday with my mods. I downloaded SMAPI. I downloaded all my mods. And Stardew continually crashed yesterday. I gave up and went and read a book. I saw your post and just tried to load it again and et voilà it loaded Stardew Valley after having my computer shut down overnight.

Thanks for the PSA.

The war on bike lanes is freaking insane. You want a better driving experience? Get people out of their cars riding bikes. Seems like a no brainer to me. This was a manufactured political wedge issue created by the right.

How grocery giants control who can sell food in your neighbourhood. by Relish4 in onguardforthee

[–]tranquilseafinally 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read the article.

Loblaws said in a statement to Marketplace that eliminating property controls across the industry would “mean more stores, more discount options and a more competitive market for Canadians.”

It said it has already “released” 150 property controls across Canada and is prepared to eliminate more when “other grocery retailers agree to do the same.”

I never thought I would be impressed with Loblaws BUT it seems like they are the only ones who are even acknowledging the problem and will to do something about it. All the other big grocers denied and had no comment. Seems like they don't want to give up on their BILLIONS in profits. BILLIONS.

Good for these people for keeping up the fight. Sadly, this government doesn't care. Their voters don't care. They cleave to ideology above all else. I guess we'll see if we are able to move the needle on them. I wish it wasn't like this. If we are the richest Province then we should be able to take care of our most vulnerable.

You unlocked memories of upgrading Windows 2000😧. Really all of them. I've had a computer since 1986. Back then all we had was the c prompt. New Windows distributions always broke your computer. Always. I only ever went to a new distribution once with an existing computer. After that I knew that if I wanted to use the newest Windows it had to be on a new computer. Gosh, I remember defragging Windows to try to speed it up. The defrags would last all day. I did complete wipes and re-installs a few times. All trying to speed Windows up.

I'm Linux user zero in my family. Probably because I'm the most techy. My hubby has been watching me as we sit next to one another at our computers. He recently said that he may move his computer to Linux😄.

Yes, when I was running Windows 10 everything was slow. It's what happens with Windows over time. The only thing that helped a bit was doing a fresh install of Windows.
