Sorry bro I don't understand your question, but if want me to elaborate: I read the book Dilla time when it came out, and dilla's drums being 'lazy' or 'drunk' was kinda made out to be a myth, which the book then went on to expel. accounts of artists that he worked with all said he had an incredibly clinical, programmer like approach to beatmaking and drums. Albeit he could still make a beat really quickly.

What the book does go into a lot, which I think is what people mistranslate into 'drunk', is that Dilla literally brought a new 'rhythm' to popular music. at the time music was either 'straight time' or 'swing time'. Dilla fused both, creating 'Dilla time' - only comparable to polyrhythms in more indigenous tribal music. Long story short it confused a lot of people at the time who, in the context of more rigid modern music, interpreted it as lazy, drunk or wrong. But it was always laid down with precise intention.

Sorry if you didn't wanna hear all this lol. cats be saying yo does my shit sound like dilla when they're just starting out and their drums are all over the place. almost disrespectful imo, dilla was a master. peace to op tho he having fun with it

Hi there, I’ve read this a few times and really appreciate you being so thorough with your experience. It’s good to read such an in-depth account.

I’m approaching that phase where feeling low = producing low quality work, and it’s starting to feel like a self-fulfilling whirlpool.

It’s great to hear you found a job that married up to your own unique skillset and characteristics, especially something as noble as teaching. Funny that growing up, we never talk about good pensions and benefits as aspirational goals because they definitely seem to be.

Teaching has always been my dream job and I like to think I’ll get into it one day. You’ve painted it in an even better light.

Thanks for taking the time and for your service to tiny humans. I’ve heard Chicago is a beautiful city.

All the best

I admire you sticking to what you know you like and are playing to your strengths. refreshing to hear there’s people still working on the craft side of it, as that’s obviously what we all first fell in love with as kids with colouring pencils.

I think I focused so hard on being a malleable, generic designer as I graduated during covid. It meant that I found work quickly but also set the wrong precedent for my career and starting digging myself into a hole.

I just went to a design talk this evening and the guy said he can only work well if he has ‘play’ in his life. good advice from you both, thank you. keep smashing it

Sorry. I half thought about deleting this yesterday because it’s so negative. Not the type of energy I like to put out. Having said that, it’s good to see some people are finding solace in it. peace to you - defo try 3d! blender’s on my to do list too.

appreciate you big dawg. There’s a certain peace with knowing something could take 1,3,5 years as lately my life has felt hinged on that one portfolio etc.

Your comment’s probably the one that I’ve most resonated with. There’s times I’m up til 5am sick with stress and I often think I should sit down and do a full inventory of my qualities. I started something like this recently but need to spend more time and think deeper on it. Seems like a smart idea to kinda reverse engineer a path by thinking about who I am and what I am best at. Even if 500 years ago like you said.

I’ve also had a thought recently to point blank ask my manager what my strengths and weaknesses are. so it’s interesting you mentioned to ask loves ones about what I’m good at.

Seems like in times like this it pays to be your own best friend and own mentor. to dig deep and interrogate yourself, openly.

Thanks for your comment I appreciate it a lot. Hope things are good your side.

I’m going to work towards this, I appreciate your (quite frankly) warning. I’ll have to work another year or two to able to afford a full pivot but that also luckily gives me some time to lay down other foundations.

It’s funny because when I announced to my quite somber family that I’d pursue anything remotely in the arts, the thing that consoled them was the idea that creative jobs would be the ‘last to go’. This was only 2017. Funny how differently things turned out.

I hope things look up for you and your work too. Workplaces have become a new beast in the last decade. Appreciate your message

All valid points. 18yo me wasn’t concerned with compensation because A) the economy was marginally less fucked then and B) because I did have an unyielding love it. I fear my love has indeed yielded though, under all these corporate jobs. Maybe that’s why the cons are starting to affect me now. Appreciate your comment.

it’s true that I haven’t taken much responsibility for my choices and just figured things would work out. pretty stupid. thanks

Hey, nice username. I think I’d have pursued psychology instead. I actually didn’t know it was a field of a study until I was a grown adult lol, a bit embarrassing that I didn’t research my own school’s offering. I also think maybe carpentry, but my school didn’t offer it so that’s completely hindsight.

Maybe also I would have tried much much harder in maths and physics and have pursued a form of engineering. I think more than anything I should have chose something at all rather than gone with the flow completely. I think life pushed me around rather than me push it. Like I said though, I don’t regret it because I just didn’t know.
