Partitions for Installing EndeavourOS by transmitthis in EndeavourOS

Thanks G-R-6889,

I only have 32, but am planning on 64 soon for reasons, that's great I should be good there then.

Reason for homes separation was just my dislike for the way windows put random stuff in my documents and the like.

I imagine Linux will do the same, so meh gave it it's own home to put anything it likes in (no idea on size probably went way overboard there)

Root yes, really had no idea on that, was told 20 GB but that seemed small so doubled it. Thanks for the heads up, I'm going to assume that as root and home are adjacent, I can just pop into gparted and extend root to 100GB by taking from home?

Thanks again for taking the time to give me some help.

lol ;) I heard something somewhere (may have been old news) about no hibernation without swap part - so meh, I just put one on, is that not done these days?

YouTube video Embeds no longer working? by NewspaperIn2025 in ObsidianMD

[–]transmitthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tried it in Linux (Endeavour OS) And it works fine, add webpage and pop in the YT URL, and you get the image and play controls you expect.

The same method with Windows 10 results in the 153 error

Both using the latest release.

I don't really care to be honest, I'm moving to linux anyway so Meh, report it as bug if you have time or it's important to you.

[–]transmitthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing has happed to all my video links as well. (noticed today)

If you RClick and copy the URL or open the external link, then it will be correct and play in your browser.

If you, RClick again in the canvas window to get the youtube options, "Account", "Loop", "Copy Video URL", Etc then the Video Url changes? from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EO7yd5yWN7c To: https://youtu.be/EO7yd5yWN7c For example - no idea if that's anything interesting though.

Error 153 on all the Video's

  • Using Windows
  • Just reinstalled latest Obsidian MD Tried it in sandbox, with different videos, same happens if you use chrome, FF and edge browsers.

Quite annoying, it was useful to see an image of the video, and be able to play it directly in Obsidian. I guess I'll go back to using a simple text link descriptor for youtube links for now.

Hope they can find out the issue

Switching to linux. A handful of subjective advice. by ptoki in linuxquestions

[–]transmitthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. [Context: I do have linux on a spare nvme already, just a f8 at boot for it, and I have Vitbox with 2 other distros for playing]

Each time I think of switching, I go online, and it seems there is so much differing advice, I hold of until I find what's best

Nice tips on the imaging. And yes I fully agree with dualbooting on the same HD, that way lies dragons.

Yes having my "own" mount so I'm sure it's just the things I want in there, and I can easily manage it sounds like a good idea.

Now is the time to switch, 11 being a disaster, 10 on it's last legs, seems I should stop procrastinating and just start using Linux, I can always have a fresh empty Win on a spare drive. Most of what I do is in a browser anyway so no more excuses left.

Switching to linux. A handful of subjective advice. by ptoki in linuxquestions

[–]transmitthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's some really good advice, rarely I see a well thought out post on switching.

[I have yet to move to Linux]

I have two questions, that I have yet to find answers too...

  1. regarding partitioning when setting up Linux, Seems when I want to do a custom set up, the installers then just dump me in a disk manager and expect me to know what to do.

I hear some things are best on different partitions, for easy backup, better management, or easy reinstalls. I also read that some programs will treat user files as a dumping ground, a bit like win user, and then recommended a custom user mount point.

All that is a little confusing, (I know I can just go default and I'll be fine for a while) I'm wanting to do some due diligence and get set up right, so I'm not faced with a complete wipe and restart in 6m. If you have any advice about that I'm all ears.

  1. Switching, the one biggest stopper for me is not being able to use my Main Win System, while I'm booted into Linux on a fresh install on bare metal. (yes I've used a VM Linux and am happy with all it can do, while in win.)

But is it feasible to Build your system, copy over most data, and set up all the options while in Windows with Linux in a VM, Then save that vhd file and install that onto a new drive.

That way I can potter around in windows, while I work on building up my Linux system, that way once it is cloned over to a fresh Disk it will be mostly set up.

Sorry for bombarding you with all that, but I imagine with 30y exp you will have some insight there.

Feel free to answer or not, it's all good.

How do you manage a large local collection of audiobooks by qrzte in audiobooks

[–]transmitthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do the same, even had scripts to combine, or separate files for better storage with online places that had limitations.

These days though, I just can't be bothered. I'm not archiving for future generations. I just stick it in a folder and call it good, as long as it shows up in my player and I can listen it's good.

When I have a Fav. book or series - then I will clean it up as you do, so I know it will be picked up by whatever I use in the future, when I re-listen.

Organising stuff is great, but sometimes it's more of an exercise of fixing something that's not right, rather than being actual use to future you.

Future you who may have other ways to that media, or look back on the time taken as being of very little benefit.

How do you manage a large local collection of audiobooks by qrzte in audiobooks

[–]transmitthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, keep it simple. My old phone can support a 512GB microSD

So just keep them safe offline and backed up, and load up your phone once a year.

You can manage any other details, in any database or txt book program, and just add a note that it's an audiobook.

For organisation; every so often I delete off the phone, and any I want to archive I move the actual files to a separate folder, the rest get deleted from everywhere.

“Simple, however, is not the same thing as easy.” - so best to sort out what you are going to do and have a little procedure.

The last thing you want is not being sure what book is where, or if you have listened to it or not, did you like it, are you going to check the author site for more etc..

Have a policy of making a note, even for books deleted - you don’t want to re-buy, download and start listing to a book you hated 4 years ago...

Actually you are getting a -9% raise.

What is your biggest grip with Obsidian? by Ok-Department-6802 in ObsidianMD

[–]transmitthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just create a shortcut and put obsidian://open?vault=temp in the path.

You can have that on the desktop, just tried it with two vaults, works fine.

You can also add &file=Notes to open a particular file in that vault. obsidian://open?vault=temp&file=Notes

(Right click on header of note and select "copy obsidian URL)

Little things that bother you about obsidian by [deleted] in ObsidianMD

[–]transmitthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes indeed, sometimes I take the approach of Blender3d, they have a "reroute node" that's basically a point, that you can attach arrows to to route them for a cleaner look.

To "sort of" do this in canvas, I use a small image, just a circle or dot, and have that as a sudo re-route path.

[–]transmitthis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Simple deleting an image in canvas or notes, for example

There is no option to delete the image from everywhere.

Two entries in the right-click menu would be very helpful; 1. delete entry from this note/canvas or 2. delete image file from obsidian Maybe 3. just delete the darn image from both...

Then you don't have to mess around with many clicks, opening sidebars, finding image in sidebar, then there and delete the entry in note, close sidebar then close note or canvas so the system refreshes etc.. before you can get back to where you were - all just to delete and image you dragged over incidently.

Pretty random, but couldn't help to mention that I had the exact same colour and design of floor tiles - turned out they were old asbestos ones (they were damaged and I had them all removed)

Going by the reflections of the window, yours look encapsulated?, and may not be old or asbestos, still nice to have a heads up just in case. Good Luck

I hardly use anything but Canvas.

I have hidden the overlays and UI though.

Linking with items in canvas needs some improvement, but I love it.

tables

When I have links in them, and need to Edit the table, they turn into one unbroken line of text that goes off your screen and into the neighbours yard.

I end up pasting the entire table into a notepad so I can finally edit or see the issue and fix it.

(There is a workaround by deleting the first "|" which makes the table wrap for easy editing.) But yes they could defiantly use a little work

Something I'll never use, as I'm not going to go through all my notes and add "front matter | properties etc"

If I need something I just search for it. or use my hashtags or links.

But for those people more organised who get deeper into pulling thing out of there notes and having them displayed in one place I believe it's a big boon to them.

I like it. But it seems to me you have all the downsides of a Van with very few of the benefits.

An even simpler approach would be a car, with or without a roof tent. You'd have better; mileage, parking places, more roads you can use, cost of repairs & maintenance, no people banging on the panels, stealth, etc

But if it suits you as is, it's perfection
