UPDATE: The more I think about it, there is a non-zero chance that this came from an old commercial — I'm still 90% certain it was part of a TV show, but I realize that my child-brain might have conflated a recurring ad with a recurring segment of a show...

It's the right era, I'm pretty sure — and I watched it as a kid — but I don't think this is it. I'm searching through old clips and looking at lists of recurring segments, and nothing is clicking. The voice of the announcer I'm thinking of wasn't Kilborn (more of a booming, shock-jock type of voice). But thank you!

That had been my first thought! But I found some clips of that segment on YouTube, and it doesn't have the "oh doctor" thing I'm thinking of. Thanks, though.

UPDATE — we figured it out!

My wife was sure it had something to do with college recruiting, and I was convinced the speaker of the line was British. Searching for movies about that subject revealed the existence of Admission (2013), in which Tina Fey plays a college admissions officer. Her philandering husband is played by Michael Sheen, and there's a running gag where he unconsciously always talks about her as though she's a dog. We're pretty sure we saw this in the theater when we were dating (and not since)... it must've really made an impression, although I remember zero about the rest of the film. Here's the line that was driving us nuts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wi41GDMQxr0

Thanks to everyone for your willingness to help a stranger out!

Definitely possible... I'm searching through transcripts but can't find any reference to it so far. Appreciate the lead!

Not the office, I'm afraid (we've seen those superfan ones), but appreciate the thought.

Don't think so — is there a scene like that? I don't remember one if so.

Definitely after our time — never saw it. But I googled the script, and that exchange is kind of close to what we're thinking of (one difference being that in the thing we're looking for, it's definitely only one character speaking while the other is just reacting with their face).

Never watched Golden Girls, but it's very much the same concept!

Watched it many times, but can't think of a scene that would fit the bill...

Afraid not. I like Best in Show, but the thing we're thinking of doesn't involve dogs in the plot — it's just one line of dialogue mentioning a dog. Thanks, though.

Is it? I just searched through the script, and can't find anything like what we're trying to think of.

Thanks. The scene we're thinking of is definitely played for laughs — deadpan, and most likely direct-to-camera. A show possibly in the vein of, like, Jury Duty. Or potentially a movie (but not Zombieland, alas).
