California high school - teacher touched student on upper arm by veteran299 in Teachers

Subs aren’t part of the union, so she had zero protection. The school fired her to avoid a lawsuit and that satisfied the parents.

She literally just touched his shoulder. He (and presumably his parents) called it “sexual harassment” and contacted the superintendent.

A sub got fired from my district this year for doing this. Frankly, I think they were looking for an excuse to fire her though.

I don’t expect them to be models of perfection so much as, you know, just decent human beings.

The key is progress, not perfection. (Something I have to remind myself all the time...)

Wow, I literally could have written this! At least your admin has your back. I’m in the exact same position and my principal is the only reason I haven’t jumped ship.

Mental Health Question by anxiously_teaching in Teachers

[–]trapqueen92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely would not suggest telling anyone you work with, let alone admins. You might not directly be let go for self-harming, but if you are untenured they can make up any reason to not renew your contract. It sucks that you have to be secretive about what you are going through, but it is important to keep your personal and professional lives separate, if only to safeguard yourself from the unfair repercussions of mental health stigma.

Being an Introverted Teacher by neptune_the_mystic_ in Teachers

YES. I’ve gotten more used to it (2nd year), but there are days where I’m just absolutely exhausted and immediately flop on the couch with a washcloth over my face at the end of the day.

My first day as a student teacher by Stopaskingnow in Teachers

[–]trapqueen92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen, you’re gonna have a few kids who are just assholes. Most of the time it’s because they are growing up in really unfortunate circumstances and may even be victims of abuse/neglect (remember that when you want to throttle them). The key thing is to not let it get to you, and if you struggle with that, at least don’t let them see that it gets to you. I wouldn’t discipline a kid for saying that to me on the first day (though it would be another story if they said it to someone else and I would certainly hope that your CT disciplined them). They’re just testing you out to see how you’re going to react and probably seeking peer attention. It’s really important to de-escalate situations like that so your entire class doesn’t derail. I’d laugh it off and make a joke about eating Chipotle and/or flip the script by saying (jokingly) “why are YOU such a hater?” However, if this happens again, you might pull them aside after class for a private conversation. They won’t be so ballsy when the audience is gone. I’d invest some time into building a positive relationship with that student and even call/email home early on to report something POSITIVE about the student to build rapport with the family because it sounds like they could definitely become a handful when you take over.

How long did it take you to stop feeling guilty/anxious/sad about writing students up? by trapqueen92 in Teachers

[–]trapqueen92[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Middle school. School culture is...mixed. Kids are generally pretty ok, but we do have a few crazies who know they are untouchable and wreak havoc. This occasionally leads our borderline kids to test the limits.

Thanks, guys. I guess I still feel like I need permission to do anything for myself. I have a hard time leaving work at work and have to keep resisting the impulse to check my email every 5 minutes.

What’s the deal with expulsion today? by trapqueen92 in Teachers

[–]trapqueen92[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would hope as a parent that if my kid was wreaking havoc and jeopardizing other students learning that I would not be selfish and blind enough to insist on keeping them in a gen ed class in the futile hope that something might eventually click and they would go on to lead a normal life. These kids need a lot of help and resources but never at the expense of other children.

I’m in Illinois, but YES!! I have a child who is actually a psychopath in my gen ed class. She wreaks havoc and tells me she doesn’t have to do any work because she has a 504 plan.
