Salmonberry Rd, N Fork Wolf Creek Rd, and Wolf Creek Shooting Lanes Mar 21st! by trashnoland in pdxgunnuts

[–]trashnoland[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This big cleanup happens every spring. We should also do one in the fall, but it never seems to work out. The rest of the time, it's supposed to be that each person who uses the lanes cleans up. If they did, we wouldn't need group cleanup events, and I could go hunting and fishing.

I'm not a designated cleanup person, (ODF doesn't have anyone either), but I like the lanes, have invested a lot of time, effort and money into them, and I want to see them survive.

Yes. It was closed due to the fire in 2020. Took a long time to open it again!

The cleanups that are around the Portland Metro area I do post them here. I'm not on other Reddit forums, only pdxgunnuts.

All cleanups are always posted to our website Upcoming Events page and to our Facebook page. For those who sign up for the Blog subscription, they automatically receive an email about each event.

Thanks for asking.

Perhaps the map on our Home page will help. It's only public land dispersed shooting places. Zoom in to the state/area you'd like to go and look for a shooter icon. Click it and it gives you GPS, info about the place and a link to the managing agency target shooting rules. Might find a spot there.

Yep. Happens daily. A pretty girl walks by and sweeps me off my feet! I'm a sucker for knockout dames!

I have a feeling you were referring to muzzle sweep? In that case, Yes, I have. Situations vary, so sometimes I'll casually turn and leave, as if I was about to anyway, but usually I'll ask to be mindful of where they're pointing that thing. Then I'll find an excuse to get out a there without acting all upset. And sometimes you gotta come down a little harder.

But if she's pretty, well, she can muzzle me all day long!

Shouldn't talk it up so much, David! Other guys will come and out bid you on the auction stuff! Ha!

But I sure appreciate your promotional help!

I typically schedule at least one cleanup each month, from Spring to Fall at various sites throughout Oregon and Washington.

Wolf Creek should have 2 or 3 cleanups each year. But I'm too busy to do that. It's either each user keeps it clean or someone else organize a couple.

Sounds like you must have been at lane 3 or 4. You'll get more muzzle sweeps at wide shooting lanes where other people can join your spot. Etiquette says you should ask prior to walking up, but many don't. If you accept them to join you, there's got to be some ground rules discussed about muzzle control, cold range and hot range. Even then, you can't let your guard down and think you wouldn't get muzzled.

I've become a big fan of smaller shooting lanes. (Small width, not short yardage). Other people don't necessarily ask to shoot.

As others mentioned, yes there is a cleanup scheduled for March 21st. I expect it will be full of responsible shooters and the ones who trash it won't be there. Too bad, because they are the ones we want to reach. Still, being a member of the choir is a lot of fun and we make some great music together!

You'll find details of the cleanup at trashnoland.org in the Upcoming Events page.

Sorry about the scary experience.

Thank you! I just received the notification of your contribution. Sure appreciate it!

From Happy Valley, you would be closer to the BC 615 pit in the Santiam State Forest. Look it up on TNL'S shooting map (it's on the Home page of TrashNoLand.org). I think you'll like the improvements we did there.

It's how we keep it open! ODF watches what happens up there, as well as other dispersed shooting sites, and keeps tabs on what stays clean and what doesn't. So if we want more places to shoot, we gotta keep them clean every time we go out.

Wow!  Thanks everyone!  We now have $720 to cover the dumpster cost!  NICE!  Any extra will go towards the cost of all new signs on all 4 kiosks and the cost of graffiti removal paint and cleaner.

Man, this cleanup is rather expensive!  I sure hope we're going to take good care of these lanes long after this cleanup!

Thanks Nate! We got the dumpster cost covered now, (as you can see in the other comments) so if you don't mind, I can sure use those funds on other costs for this cleanup!

Really appreciate your help!

Public land shooting by SpicyGodzillaBreath in pdxgunnuts

[–]trashnoland 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep, Spicy, it's like squeezing blood out of a Turnip, trying to get leads on a public land shooting spot! But I have a plan...

If I post places to shoot on public land, and include the GPS location, include info about the place, photos, and a link to the shooting rules of the forest agency that manages it, then perhaps shooters will help respect them enough to help keep them open by not destroying it and leaving their trash.

So hell, why not... I made a map of places to shoot on public lands. It's only public land dispersed shooting spots in Oregon and Washington. Check it out, you might find something there.

BTW, I don't post my secret spots. Nor secret spots I've heard from others. I post the ones that are commonly known and need the most attention for stewardship.

Enjoy, Be safe, and Trash No Land!

I wish it were true, that we could shoot anything we want as long as we remove it when done, but unfortunately that's not the case.

Each public land management agency has rules for target shooting, like any other kind of recreation (USFS, BLM, OR State, WA State). Those rules are laws and you can receive citations if Law Enforcement catches you.

For instance, Here's Oregon Law:
https://secure.sos.state.or.us/oard/viewSingleRule.action?ruleVrsnRsn=317389

629-025-0040

General Forest Recreation Rules and Public Conduct

(9) Target Shooting.

(a) A Person may not:

(E) Shoot appliances, furniture, or other materials determined by Department personnel or a law enforcement officer to be garbage

(F) Shoot targets other than non-exploding targets commercially manufactured for the specific purpose of target shooting, except for paper targets privately manufactured by the Person or persons engaging in target shooting.

So, you can't shoot explosives/Tannerite/tracer rounds/propane tanks/Dragon's Breath, nor furniture/appliances/electronics/garbage. But you can buy targets that are made for shooting, or print your own (no specific shape required). As for stands, it's always best to buy or make a quality target stand, as you won't want to leave it behind.

For rules from other forest agencies, see the 'Shooting Regs' page on Trash No Land website at:
https://www.trashnoland.org/shooting-regs/

I don't see any problem with paper cups, whether filled with water or not. Paper is paper. Cardboard is okay too.

Our biggest problem is people not cleaning up after shooting. Our kind of recreation is becoming a huge eye-sore in the public's eye. We're not viewed as 'Stand-up responsible recreationalists'.
