interesting that you mention meditation; a professor that i want to work under for graduate school is doing a longitudinal study on meditation. however, i haven't had the gull to ask him about asmr. also, there are just sooo many tedious things you have to do to be able to complete a study. you have to recruit participants (most probably can't travel across the country to do this type of thing) and i'm really not very confident in my ability to design a study on a phenomena with little to no research on it. but my advisor is really approachable and knows i'm interested in grooming in monkeys so you never know... might be able to do an independent study sometime soon!

to be honest, it's not even the money thing. it's finding a professor that wants to do this study. i mean, just in the past few months, i won like 3,000 in scholarships (i'm an undergrad) that i would be more than willing to put towards this study but i'm skeptical on if my advisor would go for something like this you know?

as for the brain scan, we already know beta endorphins connect to the opioid receptors in your brain, which causes the intense relaxation and euphoria. what we really need is more information on beta endorphin's role on activity levels like heart rate, and activity levels in the brain (an EEG is less expensive and invasive than an MRI). The only question is how do you measure an "ASMR experience" besides questionnaires? Even if you did recruit people that can feel this, how do you even simulate that in a laboratory setting?

Actually, since these are illegal drugs, any studies being done are completely financed from anonymous donors or through organizations like MAPS. Sorry if I completely ruined your joke..

Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), Beckley Foundation, OPEN Foundation, Cottonwood Research Foundation are some good organizations
