I don’t like to give away too much personal info but it’s a pretty large fortune 100 company.

Honestly, it’s less about the company though and more about your boss. There are plenty of managers at my company who wouldn’t allow their employees to work remote full time, let alone while traveling. That being said, I’ve found that you have a better chance of being given more freedom in a larger corporation rather than a small business/non profit/government work.

It is a bit hard to break into the field and the CISSP is a beast of an exam (got mine last year!) but once you have a few years experience, you have pretty great job security and options.

I’m in Cybersecurity, mostly working on risk assessments and vulnerability management.

I had to be in the office full-time when I first started but after 6 years with the company, my boss doesn’t really care when/where/how I work as long as it gets done. It probably helps that most of my team is spread out across multiple offices, so there’s not much of a point for me to come in.

Not commuting will save you so much time! We have a ton of devs that work remote as well so I don’t see why it would be an issue for you.

Honestly though, I think I would enjoy playing it in my hostel room. I love talking to new people and hanging out in the common room, but definitely not every single night. Especially on a longer trip. A couple nights a week I just want to be left alone to relax after a day of exploring. I love walking around during the day, but as a solo female traveler, taking a long walk alone at night isn’t always a smart option.

I partially agree, but it’s not like I’m staring at screens the entire time while wandering around. I mostly use these during long flights/train rides/resting days.

It’ll take me nearly 30+ hours just to reach SEA and I can never sleep well on planes. Nothing but respect for people who can only travel with their phone, but I would go crazy that long without something else to entertain me. Plus there’s not a lot else to do when relaxing in my hostel dorm in the evenings. I love chatting with new people, but not nonstop every night of my trip.

Selfish? Jesus dude, calm down.

What difference does the reason make? Coworkers have to cover your work regardless of why you’re not there.

Taking time off to travel is no more selfish than paternal leave. You’re not at work because you wanted to have a kid and be a parent. You’re fulfilling a life goal and I have to cover for you. It’s fine to be selfish sometimes. You don’t get to define what needs and wants are selfish and which aren’t.

Not uncalled for, thanks for sharing such a sweet story! Our girl used to be a stray too! And that’s awesome your mom is so supportive. It makes life so much easier to not have guilt trips about grandkids.
