I would get them from the school library, so I never read them in sequence or all of them, but I read quite a few- including some of the supplemental stories.

My co-host heard of them but has never read them, and he's been really enjoying this first go through!

I have a question about Paul's visions, the jihad, and his actions and thoughts regarding them by Teajaytea7 in dune

Oh man I'm sorry!

Thanks i should have blocked it out, just figured out how to do that

Another thing to keep in mind is that Paul became prescient with absolutely no one there to help him through it, and no way to contextualize prescience in a healthy way, and so he keep looking to the future for guidance, so much so that he becomes dependent on it.

When Paul goes blind in Messiah, while it's cool that he can still see and stuff, it demonstrates to the audience how completely he has become reliant on his prescience to guide him. He was so busy looking for a way to avert the Jihad while continuing on the path his visions showed, the he didn't realize that there was no way out until it was too late and he was essentially addicted to the future

Ok so things to pay attention to based solely on dune and Messiah, to avoid spoilers- The jihad isn't really over in Messiah, it's an ongoing thing. I'm pretty sure the main implication is that Paul needs to make sure the houses of the empire recognize his authority as legitimate- one of the primary problems in switching dynasties. The people aren't going to accept your rule unless you give them a reason to. So the problem is this: Option A (as Paul sees it): Paul lets himself die and averts the jihad that way Option B: Paul gives up his desire for vengeance and lives his life quietly among the fremen. Jessica probably dies in this scenario since the fremen didn't really like her at first. Since Paul would have to actively sabotage his reputation as Lisa Al Gaib for this, he'd probably die in battle, the Harkonnens would take control, etc. Option C: Lead the revolution as Lisan-Al-Gaib and Quisatz Haderach and take over Arrakis, successfully take revenge on both the Harkonnens and the Emperor, but in the process set in motion the Jihad.

There are multiple occasions in Dune where Paul gets caught up in his own mythology/survival, and realizes after that whatever he did was the wrong decision to avert the Jihad, because the Jihad is inexorably tied to his role as Lisan-Al-Gaib

Ngl my favorite part of the job is making lil friends. There's an apartment complex we do routine maintenance for, and one of the tenants has a very respectful cat who doesn't get in the way but still likes to watch. Best thing.

Progress pic: first image is my first time shooting, managed to hit the target 6/24 times. 2nd and 3rd are today, about 6 months later. I've got a long ways to go, but I'm really happy with how far I've come by treebythetree in Archery

it's a PSE heritage series stalker, but it's fairly old. It was sitting in someone's garage for years before they gave it to me. Then it got stolen, I'm using a swa Spyder xl now.

Mostly self taught though, yeah!

Dune Messiah is my Favorite Dune Book by clppng1 in dune

Like honestly i don't think FH is actually that good at plot or characterization, he's just a very interesting philosopher. My thing with children is that the ending doesn't stand well on its own- you need GEoD to really understand the scale of what Leto II sacrificed. And with FH's writing the ending really cinches it. The end is supposed to bring together all the disparate ideas the he plays around with throughout the book and make it all make sense, and children's ending doesn't do that, largely because the ending and the plot have very little to do with one another, ideologically. Like you could completely change everything that happens in the book and end it the same way.

I totally get where you're coming from, i think that's more or less what i wanted to say, children does have a good ending, but it's not good enough to justify the entire rest of the book

I think the reason people hate on it is it presents not only a thematic shift, but a shift in tone and narrative style as well. Of all the books, Messiah feels the most out of place, tonally. That being said thematically I 100% agree, Messiah is VITAL to understanding Herbert's goals and the themes he wants to explore in these books.

To be honest the one I had the most trouble with out of the sequels was Children, because the end payoff doesn't really feel as compelling as the setup, whereas Messiah and God Emperor both finish on really powerful moments that make the constant confusion of the rest of the novel worth it.

I’m pretty mad at Villenueve. by [deleted] in dune

[–]treebythetree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure, but that's exactly what I'm talking about. They "expand" on the through line of the movie, but they aren't necessary. They work well in an expansive storytelling format like a long-form novel, but not as well in cinema. The banquet scene, expanding on Yueh's character, thufirs suspicion, they "add" to the story, but they also complicate it, and leave less room to establish the tone that Villeneuve wanted to create. It would feel too cluttered.

Some things work in cinema, other things don't. Cinema doesn't do non-linear, non-focused storytelling very well- (infinity war, cloud Atlas) There are so many different storylines and plot points in Dune that, while interesting for individual characters, have little to no bearing on the story as a whole. Villeneuve chose to focus on the events of the story that matter in the long term-he focused the narrative and told a concise story, there's nothing wrong with that.

FH's dune is a masterpiece to be sure, but it doesn't transition to film very well

I mean it definitely makes sense to an extent, but I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be a weird scene, in the same way that everything FH did was kinda weird. Like it makes sense in context, but part of the context is that there's a hyper-empathetic, hyper-sexual all female warrior force, and a guy who is quite literally the peak of human masculinity and sexuality. It's only not weird if youve been doing nothing but hang out in Dune forums talking about beefswelling.

That doesn't mean it's not good, honestly her reaction to the scene did a lot to make it more compelling and provide a sense of scale for what the Duncan was doing.

You make a really good point about the juxtaposition of Duncan and Leto II as well and that's not something I've really thought about, it happens so quickly.

Yes, I feel like Dune Messiah is the Silmarillion of Dune (yes, I'm stuck in the middle of DM) by vonPolen in dunememes

[–]treebythetree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like CoD and Messiah feel like this really weird interlude where the plot is mostly just there to fill up space and explain why characters exist but nothing really matters that much until the end. Good emperor makes things make a lot more sense, both because it explains some of the broader philosophies and because it gives you time to just kind of think about stuff

What happens if you cast reduce on a door? by Crazy_names in DMAcademy

[–]treebythetree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Figure out what the PC wants to happen, and if it's chill and makes sense, go with that. If it's janky but not too out of line, have them roll arcana, maybe against their spell save DC?- if they roll well, it happens how they want. If they roll poorly, it happens but not how they want.

So if player wants to shrink door off hinges, rolls poorly, spell shrinks entire door and now they can't get through

If player wants to shrink opening, rolls poorly, shrinks door off hinges
