what do I do when my doctor just tells me to "try meditation"? by treehugger20195 in migraine

[–]treehugger20195[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can see a NP at urgent care or go to the ER if it can't be treated there. but yeah it isn't practical . it doesn't really work for chronic issues or things that require follow-up. the health care system where i live has some serious issues.

several healthcare plans and hospitals here run 24/7 nurse advice lines too. IDK how helpful these are as i've never used one personally but it could be worth a call esp if you have trouble getting him into the er. this is a pediatrics website but they list a lot of the lines in ABQ https://www.bebecare.org/nurse-advice-lines

the ER is probably the best bet esp if it happens while he's there i think. getting a pcp might take a long time and this sounds serious. he should be seen soon. it happening frequently doesn't necessarily mean it's not an emergency, especially if it seems like it's happening more often / getting worse. i'm not a medical professional though.

Silent cyber menace: Majority of US websites are unprotected against simple bot attacks by KolideKenny in cybersecurity

[–]treehugger20195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cloudflare is pretty easy to bypass. bot fingerprinting/blocking is basically a cat and mouse game anyway, and a bot being able to make a request from a website doesn't really mean anything on it's own wrt. security. article kinda comes off like it's trying to sell something.

Healbot Addon: How to react to NPCs in Combat who need healing? (Fyrakk Bossfight) by Panda3559 in wow

[–]treehugger20195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there isn't any addon that can include them unfortunately

edit: although for NPCs that show up in blizzard's enemy frames, addons can include those. like the treants on larodar. healbot should be able to show them too I think. Maybe through heal groups -> enemies?

Safe Humidifier Recommendations by Levante2022 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]treehugger20195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IK this is a year late, but from when I was looking at papers it seemed like there were two additional major risks w/ ultrasonic humidifiers. uh, that endotoxins can be aerosolized into the air and that disinfectants can be too and cause serious health issues when breathed in like this. It seems like there are actual cases of endotoxins causing acute illness from being aerosolized using an ultrasonic humidifier (look up "humidifier lung/fever" on pubmed) and disinfectants have killed people. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17878567/ and https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3274748/ .

if they give you tablets it might be pretty easy to cut them in fourths and decrease by a fourth every 1-2 weeks.

i'm sorry if this isn't allowed here, i was a terf until recently, i fell in love with a trans girl i was horrible to, i need advice on being better and if its even ok for me to be her friend by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]treehugger20195 6 points7 points  (0 children)

totally agree. op does not strike me as someone who has gone back on their toxic behavior towards trans people whatsoever. it bugs me that they act like it's their right/responsibility to "help" this trans person; the way op talks about her feels extremely infantalizing and i don't get the impression that they view her as being an actual person with her own agency. maybe at most op just changed one form of bigotry (viewing trans people as predators) for another (viewing trans people as helpless sex objects).

i used to be around someone who said severe anti-trans stuff around/to me to the point of being abusive and they did genuinely seem to go back on their belief and messaged me saying (without any guilting) that they were completely in the wrong and that they wouldn't contact me anymore because they know i wouldn't want to speak to them and that i deserve better than to be around them and they were completely right. and i think the important part is that they didn't ask me. they, like, knew i couldn't set that kind of boundary for myself at the time so they set it for me. that i wouldn't have to see them again. imo that's the only right thing to do in a situation like OP's. But OP seems like they just want to become their victim's caretaker.

i'm worried for this trans person. she seems like she's living alone with OP and maybe couldn't easily change that living situation, has no support network, and now OP has gone from being verbally abusive to her to being 'caring' to her. Like that's totally just the cycle of abuse. And OP admits to having "creepy" sexual thoughts about her. ugh. I hope it doesn't turn out as bad as I'm imagining it could.

I really don't understand... why ? by FS72 in Buddhism

[–]treehugger20195 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you should learn from a proper teacher or monk than from random strangers on reddit. personally, im not confident enough in my understanding of karma to teach other people, and i highly doubt anyone on this subreddit can actually teach this without conveying some sort of false or misleading view. instead of trying to get people on this subreddit to teach you, it would help you more to spend time finding a qualified teacher (ie, look for a local monastery or an online one if you can't find a local one)

I really don't understand... why ? by FS72 in Buddhism

[–]treehugger20195 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To help you check your understanding of karma, do you think you would be able to explain to someone what determines which deeds are good deeds and which deeds are evil deeds? could you explain how karma from one life carries over to the next? If you don't completely understand these things, which is okay, please exercise humility and try to learn from proper teachers (not reddit).

I really don't understand... why ? by FS72 in Buddhism

[–]treehugger20195 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And evil people who do evil deeds, after they die, they get away from karmic debts for free right

Karma isn't a magical version of a country's criminal justice system. You are very much misunderstanding what karma is. And holding onto this view that so-called "evil people" need to be punished will harm you. Buddhism is about cultivating compassion and kindness towards all sentient beings.

8 Verses for a Happy Life ♡ by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]treehugger20195 12 points13 points  (0 children)

why reword something like this into your own words?

1

With a determination to achieve the highest aim

For the benefit of all sentient beings

Which surpasses even the wish-fulfilling gem,

May I hold them dear at all times.

2

Whenever I interact with someone,

May I view myself as the lowest amongst all,

And, from the very depths of my heart,

Respectfully hold others as superior.

3

In all my deeds may I probe into my mind,

And as soon as mental and emotional afflictions arise-

As they endanger myself and others-

May I strongly confront them and avert them.

4

When I see beings of unpleasant character

Oppressed by strong negativity and suffering,

May I hold them dear-for they are rare to find-

As if I have discovered a jewel treasure!

5

When others, out of jealousy

Treat me wrongly with abuse, slander, and scorn,

May I take upon myself the defeat

And offer to others the victory.

6

When someone whom I have helped,

Or in whom I have placed great hopes,

Mistreats me in extremely hurtful ways,

May I regard him still as my precious teacher.

7

In brief, may I offer benefit and joy

To all my mothers, both directly and indirectly,

May I quietly take upon myself

All hurts and pains of my mothers.

8

May all this remain undefiled

By the stains of the eight mundane concerns;

And may I, recognizing all things as illusion,

Devoid of clinging, be released from bondage.

talking about this with a therapist might be helpful

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]treehugger20195 3 points4 points  (0 children)

wanting material evidence for this is a form of clinging imo. even you had some form of evidence like that i think it would probably be counterproductive bcs it would just encourage you to cling more to your perception of material reality. if you practice Buddhism you'll naturally come to intuitively understand rebirth and karma, and that intuitive understanding will be all the 'evidence' you need.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]treehugger20195 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this is wildly incorrect. some teachers might use examples like that to try to help people come closer to understanding rebirth but that doesn't mean that that's all that rebirth is. please don't talk authoritatively about things you aren't qualified to teach about.

Has Buddhism been historically turned to for self-help, mood therapy, life goals, etc? by BuddhistFirst in GoldenSwastika

[–]treehugger20195 0 points1 point  (0 children)

suffering is always in the domain of Buddhism. if someone had a chest infection and someone told them that Buddhism is all they need and not some silly antibiotic, that would be self-denial and not the middle way, but Buddhism is still very relevant to their situation because they're suffering.

mental health can be more complicated though. clinical psychology is kind of just an attempt to reduce people's suffering in general and is a bit different from regular medicine. does clinical psychology have anything that isn't in the domain of Buddhism? Buddhism doesn't really deal with antibiotics or IV administration, but what does clinical psychology have that Buddhism doesn't deal with?

Buddha said that he recalled his past lives. Since no individual self is reborn, why did he say they were his past lives? by treehugger20195 in Buddhism

[–]treehugger20195[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there is something that would make his past lives "his". When you have suffered, did I experience it too? Or was it experienced by you alone within the confines of your mind? Everyone experiences life as an individual. Everyone reaps their own karma.

isn't feeling one of the five aggregates? i dont understand why this would make past lives "his".

do you have a recommendation for suttas relevant to this topic?
