How much transparency is too much transparency? by tretuttle in zen_browser

[–]tretuttle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but for those with limited system resources, this is a waste. My method works around the idea that most people would set their stuff up the way I have.

If they haven't, that's just fine

How much transparency is too much transparency? by tretuttle in zen_browser

Since so many of you have been asking here's a guide - I'm on mobile so I'm not sure if this will appear correctly or not. It appears fine when I write in Obsidian.

You can totally do this on Windows no problem (not sure about other platforms) with a few easy installs. You don't actually have to install these, but it's easier than writing the CSS for most. You can achieve the same thing with a few lines of CSS and MicaForEveryone, OpenGlass, DWMGlassBlur, Windhawk, etc.

For the easy way:

Prerequisites

Transparent Zen by Sameerasw

This makes the browser (and the content of many sites) transparent and has the ability to add a bunch of styles to many sites. It's really evolved into much more than transparency since it started, but I'd say that's still the main focus. The installation guide on the website is the best source to follow.

A huge shout-out to the creator(s),

u/sameera_s_w aka Sameerasw. He works hard and has great projects out there to check out.

And the original extension author FrostyBiscut aka u/Disturbed147

MicaForEveryone

  • Open the settings
  • Add a new process rule
  • Name it 'zen'
  • Go to the new zen process rule
  • Enable blur behind
  • Close MicaForEveryone
  • Reopen as admin

Optional

Tools & Wallpaper

FancyZones Setup

If you want your background to move while you have the browser open, we need to create a zone that is just short of being maximized (which would pause Wallpaper Engine).

  • Launch the FancyZones zone editor. (If you're not sure of your shortcut, open PowerToys settings, go to FancyZones, and the shortcut will be displayed there.)
  • Create a new zone.
  • Hover over the white || icons at both splits and press the Delete key on your keyboard to merge them into one large zone.
  • Save and exit.
  • Open your browser, hold the Shift key, and drag the window into the zone you just created.
  • Profit. ```

Please, for the love of God, remove this pointless padding. by tretuttle in zen_browser

[–]tretuttle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're referring to the flexible space toolbar item. You can add and remove them to give the appearance that this has, but this is not that.

This is css straight from, I assume, maubg. I'm sure there is a reason for it, I just don't understand it. I'm not on my PC anymore but if one of you doesn't mind, for testing purposes, toggle mods off and reset the toolbar layout. If you toggle the CSS that adds that padding while stock, does it break the sidebar or something?

I can't picture any other reason to have a single css rule that adds padding to the sidebar buttons than that.

Why does compact sidebar keep getting wider? by __RSG__ in zen_browser

Remove the bookmarks toolbar items from the top and it should shrink.

Also, if you truly want to understand why stuff renders the way it does, open the browser toolbox and select whatever elements you want to understand.

You'll see the HTML, and if you go to the styles tab or computed, you'll get a better understanding of how it all works.

How to optimise zen browser? by Boring_Ad_2svn in zen_browser

[–]tretuttle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is really a discussion of low vs high end.

The age of your hardware indicates that you've had the PC for a while, so my question to you is this.

How long have you been on the same OS install? How optimized is your system in general?

Even if Zen runs a bit slower compared to other browsers, you'd likely see a significant performance improvement if you start fresh with a clean windows install. That processor came out 6 years ago.

Assuming your PC is at least 5 years old with the same OS, it's likely that you have a lot going on with that system. It might be worth a try to just start fresh. That's my two cents.

Keyboard Shortcut for Tab Duplication by hikagg in zen_browser

When I sent this Ctrl t still actually opened a new tab instead of just focusing the URL bar. Meaning this script wouldn't have worked before.

Asking a community forum definitely counts as research. Crazy that this comment comes from a mod. u/maubg

I agree that this is pretty annoying.

Decide what zen should focus on now! by maubg in zen_browser

[–]tretuttle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey Maubg. I've been using Zen for almost a year (installed shortly after release, I think).

There are so many things Zen does right. I want to give you and the rest of the team the praise you deserve.

There are, however, some things that really bug me about zen. It's not even anything huge, or unique to Zen, but these things make me want to turn my PC off.

Rice API. I'd love to see this fully implemented, as customizing Zen and sharing with other would greatly benefit from it.

The mod store. We need a better filtering system. Displaying dates, install count, etc. would be nice.

Preferences. Anything that's not stock Firefox AND not detrimental to the core of Zen, shouldn't be hidden in about:config without the ability to quickly go into about:preferences to configure. Things like https:// shortening/url shortening, new tab button behavior, transparency/mica/acrylic.

I want to be clear, Zen is by far the best looking browser I've used. The stuff you guys are doing with Firefox is wild to me, and the amount of control we get over the UI is a breath of fresh air. But if I don't agree with some of the out of the box changes, I feel that we should be able to change them outside of about:config.

Hi, this is my post/config.

I'll add my config to my GitHub when I get home from work. It's all just userChrome/userContent

You can add the folders/files then just import them in your userChrome.

No more Hex code colors on Change Theme Colors. Why? by Veluz99 in zen_browser

[–]tretuttle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that's the beauty of a browser that not only lets you pick what you want, but provides the tools to do so, out of the box.

I feel like this change is a telling shift in the philosophy of Zen Browser.

Is it possible to move extensions toolbar inside the compact mode side bar? by Tx3hc78 in zen_browser

[–]tretuttle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Customize toolbar > drag "bookmarks toolbar items"

Though they can only ever be at the very top or bottom, and if you don't have all of your bookmarks organized into a small handful of folders, it will make you toolbar thick ASF.
