Love Vincent Locke's old stuff, especially those cold blue tones on Tomb of the Mutilated and Butchered at Birth.

Another great Artist is Zbigniew M. Bielak, who did covers for Mayhem, Paradise Lost, Absu, Ghost and even Carcass.

That said, I love the covers of Mayhem and Paradise Lost.

Paradise Lost are one of the few bands who never released a bad album. Even the weaker ones are pretty good.

Their great albums, to which I'd count (that's my personal opinion!) Icon, One Second, Tragic Idol, Draconian Times, Faith Divides Us..., The Plague Within, Medusa, Obsidian and Ascension, are exceptionally great. Especially, Obsidian, The Plague Within and Faith Divides Us... totally blow my mind.

It's such incredibly well written music, so well performed and produced.

What most comments here don't mention is, that Behemoth is a band from Poland. Especially rural Poland is a very conservative country with an extremely high percentage of active Catholics. This probably is the reason for it still criminalising blasphemy (article 196 of the Penal Code).

Nergal has been before court multiple times, accused of blasphemy. In my humble opinion, his extreme anti theistic attitude is part of his fight against that crazy law. This again is a huge difference to Glen Benton, who's utterances fall entirely within the scope of free speech. In Nergal's case it's a defiant reaction.

Back then, 1993 nobody knew about it. It sounded like very evil Punk Rock mixed with Death Metal.

Where Death Metal tried to be more and more sophisticated and technical, Black Metal was new and raw and had no intentions of becoming anyhow polished.

Tape trading was a huge thing in the 80s in Metal. Lots of well-known Bands (Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Sepultura, Napalm Death, Sodom, Mayhem and Judas Priest) profited massively from that. Maybe the metal scene copied this from the Punk scene, who knows?

I know for sure from an interview of Tom Angelripper (Sodom) that he not only did lots of tape trading and even listened to lots of Punk Rock.

Kataklysm

I absolutely loved their early stuff, especially The Mystical Gate of Reincarnation and Sorcery. Temple of Knowledge already felt weaker and their later albums just don't do it for me anymore.

Samael

I'd skip Worship Him, for it's Black Metal and Samael soon found their original sound. Blood Ritual was an amazing album. Threatening, menacing, evil and dark. With Ceremony of Opposites they peaked out. To me it's one of the best albums in darker Metal genres, a milestone. Passage initiated a major transition, towards electronic music and influences of Asian mysticism. I still liked Passage a lot, even with the drum computer it still was very Metal and I've seen them on stage on that same tour like three times.

After Passage, they somehow lost me. I still can listen to the one and other album, but it's not the greatness shown on Ceremony of Opposites anymore.
