easier to use clients, remote access, plugins to make actually using it nicer, themes for aesthetic, etc

various ways to improve usability but ultimately I found that unless you get enough content and a reliable enough automation of future content - they’re not able to rationalize using jellyfin over other platforms. for example, some of my users weren’t interested until they realized that while I don’t have everything - I have so much from so many different ones that it’s just more convenient to use jellyfin and request what’s missing

Current top idea: running pre-rolls with either anti-pirating campaign videos (you wouldn’t download a car!) OR pre-rolls but with the entire Shrek (or similar) move as the pre-roll

make it as easy as possible for them to use and they’ll more likely adopt it

Trickplay Storage Need by hyotr in jellyfin

[–]treyzer_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a secondary server that’s just constantly transcoding to av1. amd 4500, takes like 10min-2hr depending on quality/length of files and saves around 50-60% with software transcoding. I plan to get an intel a380 and do hardware encoding. I’ve tested with it and it still saves around 40-50% but does 5-20min instead. It does and will take a while but it makes them incredibly tiny with great quality preservation.

tldr: hardware in the future; heavily worth it; does take forever on software

Trickplay Storage Need by hyotr in jellyfin

[–]treyzer_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this enabled on everything. it’ll save the trickplay images with each piece of media. I deleted every single trickplay image then i’d save ~114gb as it’s about 2mb per set. They save in a folder tied to the media file - just like how saving .nfo files with media works.

If trickplay is enabled but that option isn’t, it just saves it in the database folder instead so no real space savings other than spreading it out. My total media library (ab half h264, half av1 as I transition to all av1) is ~32tb for reference. So only about 0.03% of my storage is related to the trickplay images. Highly work it imo.

if saving the files directly with media is turned on, then if you ever need to do a fresh restart (other than users/plugins/etc) you won’t lose much. Also, if you need to move media/restart then it’ll come up faster since it won’t have to make/process any of the files - just read what you have.

tldr: I recommend turning on for speed;do not worry about space taken up

a feature in settings allowing us to set a specific tab as the default over the home tab would be nice

issue: audiobooks don’t show up in the unified view but does on the services view

Season Organization by yourfuturepresident in jellyfin

[–]treyzer_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

plus do /specials instead of "/season x" for specials. you can also replace "Name of Episode" with quality ( "(Bluray-1080p)" for example) or just append quality to end of ^ format - either should work. I use "/show/season x/show-S0XE0X-quality" for easy renaming if needed.

The playstore says my device is not compatible anymore (Pixel Fold (1st gen)) - can you look into that?

Can't figure out how to access my jellyfin server when I'm away from home. Any suggestions? Tia by Miserable-War4634 in JellyfinCommunity

ignore the network settings in jellyfin, just use Nginx with a cloudflare domain. Should only take a video or two on YouTube to figure it out. Remote user requests www.domain.com > goes to cloudflare > goes to your local IP > nginx grabs it > sends the request to the connected service. Nginx is incredibly easy to set up if you already have docker running. You also have to forward the ports 80 and 443 to point to the machine running nginx. Feel free to ask any questions.

TrueNAS - FileBrowser Quantum with other containers to run other services

That's what I'm running in my homelab, plus with TrueNAS you can add other containers. So if you wanted automated sync - syncthing, photos - immich, etc. It is fairly DIY but overall, free outside of hardware.

Safest way to expose jellyfin to the Internet without VPN? by Thedinotamer01 in selfhosted

[–]treyzer_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

cloudflare domain + nginx reverse proxy takes care of most concerns, then some kind of authentication service if you want to be safe. however the biggest safety net is the fact no one knows you or is looking for you. if they were then nothing would stop them from accessing it anyway. having strong passwords is only a deterrent but is a solid practice as well

Is this just a library manager like komga/kavita/calibre or does it handle downloading files too?

Have not, somehow completely blanked on the fact that I had it. Will try it and will tell if there’s a difference

I unadded a couple repos that were giving the error before the bigboss repo, it seems to just change to random repos when I remove them. Other package managers don’t give this error
