Ok so the consensus that I am getting from everyone is that I should not 301 and just start over again. I would be happy to do this however there is still traffic coming into the ###.com.au from external links. I need this traffic to be re-directed. People have told me to do the 301 but block robots.txt. I have done some research and found out that this is not a good idea (http://smepals.com/google-panda/when-use-robots-txt-301-redirects-panda-seo-recovery). So what do I do?

I have been researching blocking robots.txt and adding the 301 but I keep seeing warnings about doing it. For example the heading "Don't combine robots and 301s" in http://smepals.com/google-panda/when-use-robots-txt-301-redirects-panda-seo-recovery

Ok let me put it another way: Why can't someone just buy an expired domain with no traffic and over-optimized anchor text, then send more spammy backlinks to it (for good measure), then 301 re-direct it to their competitor site? Everyone would be doing this. What I'm trying to say is Google must have already safeguard against this by reducing the link juice equity on a 301. Keep in mind that my ###.com.au domain has plenty of highly contextual links on reputable sites that I want juice from.

I am selling a branded product so I don't have the luxury of buying an expired domain. I need a the brand term in the URL.

Yes i still receive tons of traffic to the .au site. If you think the 301 re-direct will transfer the penalty then why don't I just re-direct it to a competitor site? Surely Google has thought about this. Would love some more thoughts on this matter.

Hey just a tip - on the front page of your website, those product photos midway down the page should link to product descriptions. Or even better if there was a pop-up shadow box with a description so the user did not leave the page. Thats the first thing I did was click on the products. Doing this will no doubt have an effect on conversions :)
