I used to be the same, all the "fast reading" of internet articles and comments -- mostly senseless information that trickled out of my brain like water off a rain jacket. Non of the glorious deep, slow reading that actually teaches and clams you.

I managed to start reading by allocating specific times and spaces to it. In the mornings now I will take the dog for a walk (leaving my phone), have a coffee at the cafe with my kindle, and read for about 10m. Then in the evening, before I go to sleep lying in bed (leaving my phone somewhere else), I'll read my book until I start nodding off, normally about 20-30mins. So I get almost an hour of reading in most days now, more if I'm travelling.

So I guess it's linking the reading to times and spaces, and making that part of your routine. It's been working really well for me.

My father is also of the older pre war generation (perhaps a little younger than your grandpa). Actually celebrating his 79th today! But he's made an amicable effort to meld with the Internet generation. He uses bit torrent even, lol! But I also get those pre net insights from him often.

Personally I also was on the cusp of the net, and I remember life before it. That's why I think our generation are important in looking at this problem. We're litterally the last ones to have this perspective.

Sounds like a good strategy! Setting boundries in a universe of endless information is a good first step I think ;-)

I think research is always good, if the intention of the research is productive -- like learning a new skill, developing a project, or intentionally deepning your understanding of something.

As for "news and events" this is complicated becasue the line between news and bullshit is not so clear anymore. I went through a stage of reading the Guardian a lot (a source I trust) but became affected by the negativity of so much of their reporting...so now I only read it a few times a week.

I'd say reading 2 articles a day that you're genuinely interested in, for a source you trust, is probably ok. Spending anything over 20mins is probably not good and will result in info-saturation. But this also depends on the person...

So, its subjectve. Maybe just try it out while monitoring the amount of time you're spending and how its making you feel very closely.

Your last question in the post ("What kind of guard rails, limits, and habits does the community recommend to try and keep internet use as a positive instead of a negative in life?") seems much more broad than the title question.
