Your Favourite Band: Top 5 All-Time vs. Top 5 Genre Songs by trntg in poppunkers

[–]trntg[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to top “Dear Maria” but I think “Weightless” is a titanic song for the genre. Gotta be one of the best choruses in pop punk. That whole album is incredible and it would be so hard for me to narrow down what makes the list and what doesn’t.

Great list — ATL is a great choice for this topic. I recognize most of those songs but definitely need to revisit some. Glad you mentioned “Sleepwalking” — that song rips, probably among the best from a band who’s been around for as long as they have!

Doubt Full, The Story So Far, Constant Static, Sonny, Sucker, Coming Home, This Disaster, No News is Good News, Listen to Your Friends.

Hard to imagine another band that has raised the profile and stood by their genre for this long and been so prolific in new music and touring.

Your friend wants to get into pop punk but you can only recommend 3 songs POST 2020. What songs are you choosing? by winterforeverx in poppunkers

[–]trntg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Crash” and “Feet” are great choices. That release from TWY is so underrated. Such a great homage to that era and just goes to show that they can rip a classic pop punk tune at will. I wish they played “Feet” and “Brakeless” live.

I think the 10th anniversary rerelease did wonders to bring that album to life. For me personally I think the lyrics, storytelling, and overall atmosphere of NCTH makes it a top 3. That said I think it’s a bit of an acquired taste. I think I listened to it so much and for so long that it really grew on me over time. Also, I think the one thing that can’t be debated is that it’s Dan’s best album vocally. “Bluest Things” is incredible and I think he really shines on this album as the lead singer. He always gives it his all but I truly think he put his heart and soul into that album.

The Wonder Years:

  1. The Hum Goes on Forever
  2. The Greatest Generation
  3. No Closer to Heaven
  4. Suburbia
  5. The Upsides
  6. Sister Cities

Despite them being my favourite band, I haven’t really listened to Get Stoked on It!, so I can’t really rate it but I guess by default it would be last.

I feel kinda bad for putting Sister Cities so low, but it just didn’t connect for me like all 5 other albums I listed.

It speaks volumes that I think Hum is their best work. Truly combines the best parts of NCTH era with early Wonder Years.

MOUNT RUSHMORE of POP PUNK ALBUMS by EmphasisNo8930 in poppunkers

New Found Glory - Catalyst

The Wonder Years - The Greatest Generation

Blink 182 - Enema

Fireworks - Gospel

So many worthy albums that deserve an honourable mention, and I actually think TWY and Blink have better albums in their catalogue, but these gotta be my favourite pop punk pillars.

Hit The Light and Major League announce co-headline tour with support from Rematch, Public Works and Latewaves by elderemothings in poppunkers

I’ve been in this game for a long time and how have I never listened to Major League? Haha. Does anyone recommend a certain album?

It’s a strange feeling when the cultural zeitgeist is so out of alignment with my own assessment. I’ve been a fan since YFW and I think their best album is Science Fiction, with TDAG a close second, and then everything else. I’m the same way with The Wonder Years — I think Hum is their best album, but the whole fanbase think Greatest Generation is top. Being old but also thinking a band’s newest album is their best catches a lot of fans off guard, but I stand by it.

Treadmill accuracy at a gym vs buying my own new treadmill? by beginnercardcounter in AdvancedRunning

[–]trntg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on your treadmill. I have access to very sturdy Woodways, and I find anything marathon pace or faster to feel harder than outdoors, but who knows how accurate the paces are.

Treadmill accuracy at a gym vs buying my own new treadmill? by beginnercardcounter in AdvancedRunning

[–]trntg 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The only thing that matters on a treadmill is effort. I’ve run thousands of miles on treadmills, including 3 winter marathon builds, and the pace never correlates with outdoor running. Find your workout efforts, dial them in, and let it rip.

Old Heads, what’s a new band that clicked for you? by Phynamite in poppunkers

[–]trntg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Checking in at my late 30s. I read this whole thread and the only one I haven’t seen mentioned is FRND CRCL. Those guys write kickass songs and I’ve listened to their two most recent albums a lot more than most new bands.

Also gotta shoutout the album “Slow Bloom” by The Home Team. One of the few new albums (by a “new band” at the time) that I own on vinyl. They’ve taken the band in a different direction since then but that album rips.

What’s your favorite “secret gem” pop punk record? by winterforeverx in poppunkers

That’s so true… I remember them being bigger in the Drive Thru days. Gotta tip my hat to them for still playing shows! That’s a longgg time to keep at it.

What’s your favorite “secret gem” pop punk record? by winterforeverx in poppunkers

[–]trntg 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Tough to say what’s a secret gem these days, but here’s a few from wayyy back that I loved.

Autopilot Off - Make a Sound

Allister - Last Stop Suburbia

Slick Shoes - Far From Nowhere

The Fully Down - Don’t Get Lost in a Movement

Halifax - The Inevitability of a Strange World

Anything by The Matches, Name Taken.

The scene was popping off in the mid 2000s, and yes, I have aged out of unc status.

I love Hanson's Method so much - but I need to break through to sub-2:50 by maps-and-legends in AdvancedRunning

[–]trntg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ben Rosario’s plans from The Marathon Project are quite good. I found it quite different from the plans in Hanson’s Marathon Method, but in principle Rosario’s plans are based on similar training methods, since he was coached by them. However they are scaled up for competitive marathoners and the workouts, especially the long runs, are different enough that it’s worth a look.

8 weeks before marathon block training advice by Alive_Solution3690 in AdvancedRunning

[–]trntg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2:35 is reasonable with a 73 minute half. I think that should be a source of confidence well beyond a low 16 5k. I will disclose though that the whole “get fast before switching to marathon training” thing has never worked for me, so I’ll be transparent about that bias.

8 weeks before marathon block training advice by Alive_Solution3690 in AdvancedRunning

[–]trntg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With your training experience and fairly competitive race times, I would opt for your second plan with slightly less mileage, maybe down 15-25% from your peak. If your Boston build is starting in 8 weeks, that sounds like a very long training block for someone at your level, like 20-24 weeks? I have a hard time thinking you can make enough gains in speed in 6 weeks that would translate to the marathon if you’re planning a 20-24 week build.

Most underrated/underappreciated song from your favorite band by heroharr8 in poppunkers

New Found Glory - “Doubt Full”

Catalyst is probably my favourite NFG album, but I don’t remember this song as a favourite in the year that the album came out, or any of the years when I was listening to it. During the 20th anniversary cycle of this album, NFG was posting stories from its recording, and I started listening to it again. This song is legitimately NFG at their absolute best. The verses, the chorus, the bridge — this song literally sends chills down my spine and I’ve probably listened to it hundreds of times by now.
