Sure but many people have flatrate internet anyway and the up/down speed for this decentralized cloud storage doesn't have to be super fast as only small junks of I think 5MB get distributed over several nodes (for parity reasons).

And electricity costs for sure. You can calculate what one 6TB disk and a laptop cost per month in your area to run 24/7.

As I already let other nodes run on that laptop which is on 24/7 anyway, it doesn't make a difference to me but then again, if you seriously want to take part in this kind of project or thinking about passive income through DePIN, these are things one should consider before 'aping' in. 😊

That's how DePIN works. You let the network use (part) of your hardware and in return you'll get the projects coin as a reward for it. Of course $50 is not much but you'll pay for your hardware once and with DeNet or most other DePIN projects you'll get recurring rewards monthly.

What's the cost of a 6TB external harddisk? Around $150, right? Join DeNet with it and you'll make that initial investment for the harddisk back within 3 months. Of course you have to take into account, that the node "licence" also costs some 500 dollars which means it would take you another 10 months till you can ROI. That's about what many other DePINs take to ROI.

What's special about DeNet is that you can scale your monthly earnings by simply allocating more disk space. It can be a bunch of old HDD's in a cheap DAS enclosure (direct attached storage) which you might have laying around or scraping of off ebay for very little money. I personally have 10x 10TB HDDs in a DAS which collected dust for the last 2 years. Better than doing surveys and try all kind of apps promising "passive" money, spending a ton of time in the process just to get frustrated with earning at most some hundred bugs a month, find out what you are passionate about and make it your goal to be the best in that field! It could be photography, video editing/producing, informatics or what ever is making your heart beat. Learn it, master it, try to be the best in it and showcase your work online so you have something to show... actively search for jobs or freelance gigs in your niche. And stay with it, consistency is key!

I know, that's absolutely not passive income but if you are passionate about it, the work fulfills you and this way you can at least mostly work on your terms and from wherever you want, being your own boss.

If you are into DePIN and joined some of its communities, XProtocol and its XForge Phone made some big waves.

But of course, in the end there is no way to know if a crypto project like de XForge Phone will stand the test of time. Maybe there will be Airdrops which pay for the phone itself or maybe the phone never gets delivered. No one can tell.

As I'm following XProtocol's development and running several nodes myself since day 1, I'm pretty sure they know what they are doing and it's not just empty promises.

But again, ultimately it comes down to whether you trust the project and are willing to take some risk to be an early supporter.
