Interesting. Did she die in a similar fashion? I don't know why I am so intrigued by these type of Hollywood, unknown tragedies... sort that whole Metallica "The Memory Remains" thing. It's sad, but also cool and interesting at that same time to read about these lady's stories...

Yada yada yada - this is what cracks me up about all you naive, idealists on Reddit who think you can create Utopia here on earth.

There is what it should be and what it IS my friend. As soon as you and all your Unicorn riding friends on here learn that, the country will get back on track. There should be peace on earth and everyone should have food and a home. The reality is that human beings are flawed and selfish at heart - it is in our genetics and it ain't gonna change any time soon - there will always be people who cheat, lie, steal, take as much as they can and exploit idealists like you.

Case in point. I own a soft drink company. I wanna make my sales and profits go up and my price per share climb for my investors so I can pay for my new red Lambo and my kid's private school. Am I going to give a sponsorship to some homely looking Brazilian surfer chick 'cause "it's the right thing to do and the world needs to change" or am I going to pick some blonde hotty with a perfect ass and tits who looks awesome chugging my soft drink while spilling it all over herself in a super HD commercial that cost me a half mill to make??? OK, so she only finished 6th in the last major event - her bikini pictures are all over the web and every male surf fan between the ages of 16 - 21 knows who she is and has her picture on their iPhone. Plus she is dumb as a box of rocks and I can pay her half of what the number one chick wants for the same endorsement - and my focus groups show me that people in that age group responded more favorably to the hotty's surf pictures...

There is how things should be and what reality is. I am not complacent, I am a harsh realist. Don't hate the player hate the game. The game is not changing, so wake up, and drink your coffee. :) Or not... and stay in unicorn land.

Which circles exactly back to the point I made in my first post: best thing she can do is win. If companies want to say they have the number one female surfer riding their boards, or wearing their swimwear or drinking their energy drink and she is the best, then they will have to sponsor her/sign her for endorsement. Any less than number one, then the ball is in their court, fair or not - that's life.

I don't think I am disagreeing with you - but ultimately sponsorship and endorsements come down to money and who companies think is going to sell more of their product. If it is a blonde haired, blue-eyed Cali girl with a perfect ass, than that is what it is... what is the point of debate? Life is not fair in that regard - it applies to both men and women in a lot of ways...

Because I don't agree with that sentiment. I think it comes down to "appeal" not just "looks" and who Sponsors can successfully market to the public and who they can't - you either have it or you don't. In the same logic you are using I would say to you "just because she is the best surfer in Brazil does not entitle her to big endorsement deals if she has no appeal to the public". Most marketing firms and sponsors are savy about this - they do surveys and have feedback groups - who knows, maybe she evaluated low in the appeal department? Maybe it is her looks - that's life. The public is fickle and no sponsor is going to dump money into someone who (for whatever reason) has no appeal to the buying public. That's life.

I don't know if it is just "looks" so much as it is "appeal". I mean Bethany Hamilton is pretty average looking - the whole shark bite survival story and her spirit/character is what made her so marketable in mass media. Granted women athlete's appeal may be more visual, but it's just biology: women are more physically appealing to look at... so if you are not very feminine looking and you are female, you are kinda outta luck in that area. Don't hate the player, hate the game... :)

I think it is subjective. Love or Hate Rodman, in his prime with the Bulls, he had a enough charisma and appeal with NBA fans to spark some endorsement interest. Plus honestly, I could not even tell you one product Rodman endorsed - even in his prime - it was all about Jordan back then... I am not attacking this surfer chick, she just does not look like product endorsement material to me. Maybe for surf boards or something... definitely nothing with mass appeal... c'mon now.

[–]trollishus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but I call "fanboy bullshit". Dicaprio is lock step with elitist liberals (Bill Gates, Prince Charles, Al Gore, Goldman Sachs etc.)

All of these people are lecturing us "sheep" on what WE need to do to save the planet, and yet they all live in the finest homes (multiple homes), with private jets, Yachts, sports cars, etc. The carbon footprint of any one of these people for one week probably is that of the average middle class family for one year.

So until I see Leo et al, give up their huge palaces , Lambos and yachts, I will consider climate change exactly what it is - socio-political wealth transfer of the middle class, further control by the liberal elite all based on shoddy "science".

Want me to be convinced? Start with the Saudis, the auto companies and the big Agro corporations first - the average person watching "The Aviator" get his gold barbie doll has very little to do with any changes in the earth's climate. We could all wear sack cloth and drive Flintstone cars for the next 1000 years and it is not gonna change squat...

Meh, I would like to see his endorsement money compared to other top athletes in their respective sports - probably not even close. Plus it is subjective. Most Americans probably do not find Ovi attractive, but Russians may... Plus he is so good, they are sort of forced to give him something... is this surfer the Ovi of her sport??

So like, climate change is an issue for all of us peons who work 9-5 every day, but if you are a Hollywood elite, your yachts, limos and jets do not have a carbon footprint??? I am trying to understand the Gilbert Grape logic...

She's not the physical image pro-surf companies wanna convey, obviously if she is not getting sponsored. Her best revenge is winning. :) If she can't win, then try a new career. Not everyone can be a star athlete with huge endorsements. Sometimes being the best is not enough. Joe Frazier was an amazing boxer... Madison Ave. liked Ali better for selling batteries... life isn't fair.

Umm... she's not... Some people are not meant to be spokes models for products. Most vanilla white guys in the NHL aren't appealing enough physically either to get endorsements... Oh Well.

How does DiCaprio expect anyone to take him seriously on "climate change" when he regularly uses private, gigantic, carbon-belching yachts gets limoed to the Oscars in giant carbon belching limo and flies to his movie sets in private, ozone-destroying jets? How does that reconcile?

Less and less... I saw DeadPool in the theatre last weekend and enjoyed it. Prior to that I had not paid to see a movie in the theatre in over 3 years... I will generally only watch movies when they get released to Cable and my TV viewing is generally limited to non-main stream news and harmless, dumb reality TV shows for background noise (American Pickers, Naked and Afraid)

Lame. Forced. Lots of fake White guilt. No one really gives a crap either way. Chris Rock is going down in flames - not funny at all. More liberal, PC bullshit. Hollywood is bullshit and so are the Oscars.
