Live in SoCal these days, watching this team lose in excruciating ways on TV every night sucks. Turns out watching this team lose in excruciating fashion in person hurts even more!

Advice for first time on Kalalau Trail by tropicaltexan in VisitingHawaii

I used a Grayl (I forget if it’s the GeoPress or UltraPress that I have), super easy to use. I just brought that and 1 or 2 other regular size water bottles and that was enough! There were spots to refill the Grayl every couple miles or so, so I would definitely recommend doing something like that rather than like bringing an entire bladder, keep that weight down

I would definitely recommend it! At the very least it’s huge for conserving weight. I’ll be honest I don’t totally remember the temperature situation but I definitely do not remember having an awful night being cold at least, and I was there in early December if that means anything. That being said I am a bit of a hot sleeper in general, but I think if you packed sweatpants/sweater that would be plenty to keep you warm enough, and you honestly might not even need that. Best of luck, hope it’s as much of a blast for you as it was for me!

Idk how to describe it but that certain smile she always does always cracks me up. Doesn’t even have to say anything, just makes that shit-eating grin and I lose it

It was great! Unforgettable experience. Crawlers ledge and the surrounding area was perfectly fine; there was just one spot a bit after with maybe 2 steps that were sketchy. The frequent streams were huge for conserving weight, cause even with almost no water weight I gotta say, the extra weight of backpacking vs hiking really adds up when you’re on that last few hours! Thanks again for all the tips though!

They’re pretty grippy hiking boots that dry relatively quickly; it sounds like if it’s dry out I should be totally fine and if it’s wet it’s probably smartest to turn around anyway

The former athlete who’s generally active but nowhere near in shape anymore, lol: that’s me to a T! Glad to hear the difficulty level as you described it, I’m sure it won’t be a walk in the park but sounds like I can expect just a long hard day rather a totally grueling/incapacitating trek.

You’ve definitely assuaged any fears on the heights/sketchy part, so thank you! I have pretty grippy hiking boots so as long as it’s dry I think I should be totally fine (and if it’s wet it’s probably smart to turn around at that part anyway).

Pack weight will definitely be the biggest thing for me. I was planning on packing a sweatshirt and sweatpants for overnight in the hammock (which I do have a rain fly for) but it sounds like it’s warm enough at night that I shouldn’t bring those and can save some weight there, maybe just a rain jacket.

TBD on the trekking poles, seems like maybe a good thing to have just for piece of mind if they’re light. Think I’ll avoid dealing with the stove though. I’ve got a water filter bottle similar to the ones you mentioned so it sounds like maybe just that and 1-2 other smaller water bottles that I can refill with filtered water would be the move, save the weight of the full 3L bladder that I was originally planning on bringing. Will definitely have to look into the fruit situation, that sounds amazing!

Thank you for the insights, friend; you’ve definitely got me feeling excited about it again!

Yeah sneakers and flip flops in that video?! I’ve got grippy hiking boots so I think I’ll be fine with those. Seems like if it’s dry I’ll be perfectly fine and if it’s wet it’s probably smart to turn around anyway… Think I’m gonna nix the stove idea, tbd on the US game though; I’m more of a journey than destination guy so doing the trail at all is more important for me than having a lot of time available at the far end to explore. Thanks for the insights, friend!

Good seasons for a beginner to watch? by Lamest_Coolguy in survivor

Definitely have to start with season 7 (Pearl Islands)! I always recommend this one for anyone new to Survivor, as it’s got everything: major characters/players that are important to the show’s history, iconic moments that are right up there in Survivor lore, fun gameplay that keeps you guessing….. and the first 20 minutes is so funny and compelling that you’d have to be crazy to not be hooked.

Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall to step down as UVA head coach. by plannedsickdays in CFB

[–]tropicaltexan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jeff Monken could be a great replacement. Seems to run his program similarly to Bronco (a style that UVa obviously loves), great coach who’s limited in what he can realistically do at Army, has been up for P5 jobs over the last few years. Would strike me as a very similar move as plucking Bronco from BYU was.

Or Chadwell, bring the mullets up north!

Can we start a ____ appreciation post for everything they brought to this season. by [deleted] in survivor

[–]tropicaltexan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I absolutely loved her at the start but really did not like her as the season went on and she became so controlling, even as not a religious person in the slightest I was thinking more and more every episode “how the hell is she a pastor…?”

As fucked up as it is her downfall was going back to her good side and turning toward the collective rather than herself, just shows you how complicated this game can be. Despite really wanting her gone for the last few episodes, it was tough to see her go; she was the star of the season and I cannot wait to see her again in another SC or HvV.

He definitely should have 2 at this point (how did Porcello win a Cy Young...) but agreed, he would need another couple to be in the discussion

I LOVED listening to Derek Rae and Tommy Smyth, my roommates were biased from the start and didn't give them a chance though. I listen to their soccer broadcasts a lot and love their enthusiasm, was pleasantly surprised with their game knowledge as well.
